Will Tiger require more RAM? I'm assuming the answer is yes, but has anyone had experience with this, or received guidance from official Apple sources? I'm running Panther with 512MB currently -- i wonder if this will suffice for Tiger?

I have received guidance from official Apple sources. They indicate that your RAM will suffice, and they also indicate that I'm 11 years old for giggling every time I hear the phrase "require more RAM."

256mb is the minimum, to run OS X decently you need atleast 512mb.

Well, I wouldn't recommend running Panther on less than 512 MB (memory is cheap!!), so I wouldn't suppose Tiger isn't any different

Last I checked, the minimum was still 256 megs. However, the old maxim "You can never have too much RAM" still holds; more is better.

What do you do when someone asks you what's plugged into your ports?

Don't laugh too much; there were people who complained when the first release of the old Mac OS that wouldn't fit on a floppy came out.

I'm not actually certain when that was, though, to be honest; way up into the OS8 days, it was possible to strip the system down severely to the point where you could fit it onto a floppy disk. I don't think it was possible with OS9, though. 8.1 may have been the last release you could do it with.

OK; maybe it was 8.6 then. Like I said, I wasn't certain; I clearly remembered OS8 floppies but I didn't remember OS8.5 or OS8.6 ones. I'm now hearing reports that you can even do it with OS9, though I've never seen anyone do that and I seem to remember reading articles around that time stating that it wasn't possible anymore.

But how useful is this? Isn't a system like this crippled ...?

It was most often used as an emergency disk. If, for some reason, your drive or install was so screwed that it wouldn't boot you could boot off a floppy which gives you the option to run Disk Utility, or TTP/Disk Warrior from a CD, etc. It's similar to having an OS X install on an external Firewire drive.

Exactly. It wasn't much, but if it could get you to a state where you could run DFA or a similar utility then it was worth its weight in plutonium.

That was the most handy item to have back in the OS 8 days. I remember when I bought OS 8 it actually came with a bootable floppy. It saved my behind many times on my old PowerBook 540c.

I sure don't miss those days.
