I changed the icon for iCal a while back and it comes up to the new one when I boot the computer but after I open iCal it will change back to the default red and white one with July 17th on it. I reset the PRAM and that didnt fix it. Is there anything else I need to do to get it so the icon changes all of the time?

The icon for iCal will stay changed in the Finder but it will never stay changed in the Dock since iCal updates its Dock icon every time it launches and at midnight to reflect the current date. There's nothing you can do about it.
Also, resetting PRAM has no effect on files on your hard drive.

My iCal icon does not show the current date, it only shows July 17th until it is opened.

Couldn't he view the contents and change / get rid of the .pngs? (Not on a Mac now, cannot check.)

Right. But after it's opened, it changes to the current date. This is what he is saying.

That won't prevent it from superimposing the numbers on top. So yes, but depending on what icon he wants to use it could look very stupid.

The only way you can properly and completely change the icon for iCal is to replace the App.icns and App-empty.icns files. Further, you need to replace those files with an icon that will work with the month and date overlays that iCal adds when it's running.
