Hello,

The department of my university where I work part-time recently bought 10 new iMacs. (The revisions that just came out a week or so ago.) These models shipped with Mac OS X 10.4.0, but for various reasons the department has chosen not to deploy Mac OS X 10.4 until this summer.

Thus they want to install Panther on to these machines. However, when we put Panther on them the fans in the machines start running in turbo-mode (highest speed constantly), and the machines exhibit other weird behavior.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue and get Panther running on these new machines that shipped with Tiger? Any help, suggestions, pointers, etc, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

No, and that's just braindead on Apple's part IMO.

Other people have been having the exact same issue. I suggest you inform Apple of your issue in no uncertain terms, and one can only hope 10.3.10 will bring an update for the new Macs. (I doubt it.)

BTW, the Power Macs will work, but obviously that's not what you're looking for.

Does anyone know if perhaps it is possible to copy certain components from a Tiger install over to a copy of Panther to get it running on these new iMacs w/o the fans running in turbo-mode? If so, what components would be needed?

No, that cannot be done. It's surprising enough that Panther even runs on your new systems. New Macs have always only supported the OSs they come with as the minimum OSs for those systems, and usually attempting to install an older OS than a Mac shipped with will result in failure. It really is not a significant issue for most people, but I can see how it could be problematic for institutions, especially during milestone transitions (10.3 -> 10.4).

Somebody over at Ars has been trying this, but his initial attempts have failed.

Not going to happen. You should embrace Tiger. Its so much better than Panther. Most of its shortcomings (Pro Tools, etc) will get fixed rapidly.

All the best,
Steve
