When I was working on a winows Compaq Presario notebook it was named Terok Nor in defiance of that platform. Die hard Trekkers will understand the name (was name of DS9 under Cardasian rule).
Also, do you notice how a lot of folks on Windows machines don't name their machines or know that they can?

Are you sure> you want to know?
Ok:
My G3 hostname is Tetsubo, hard drives are Katana, Wakazashi, Hachiwara, Kusarigama, & Tachi.
My IIci (running NetBSD) is Jitte, hard drive is /dev/sd0.
My 6100/66 is Legomonstre (in light of the fact that it is in a chassis built of Lego bricks), drives are Monstre NO.1 and Monstre NO.2.
Additionally, my Linux/NT4 dualboot PC's hostname is Naginata, and my Cobalt Qube2 is ns1.

I have two main volumes:
"Acme" is my boot volume and has a Tex Avery icon...
XXgig is my new 20gig BellStor Firewire disk.
Zip names are where I get creative. It all started when I found them going out to magazines and certain printers with collected Quark files and never coming back... So I named them, hoping that at least the thief will constantly be reminded that the disk is a stray and needs to be returned to its parent. Current names are Chocolate, Gleemonex, Fluke, Vapid, Ginger, Fluffy...

We had to give network names to machines at work once. After several hours of 'discussion' as to which dodgy sci-fi or fantasy franchise to borrow names from, we resolved it by picking words out of a dictionary at random.
I think I ended up with Syndicate

I don't remember when or how I started referring to it as that. I think good names just sort of find your Mac.

In my B&W I have a nuclear thing going: Gidget (9GB SCSIU2), Little Boy (18GB SCSIU2), Fat Man (18GB SCSIU2), and The Stockpile (75GB ATA)...
On my PowerBook the drive is still "Macintosh HD", but that is going to change shortly once I get my 4x120GB FW case all setup Anyone have any ideas for these drive names (will need a total of 5 themed names)!?!

Hmm. I don't think I've ever posted to a two-year old thread before.
I keep my computer name (for AppleShare) pretty simple: Jake's G4. My two drives are named after the two AIs in William Gibson's Neuromancer (Wintermute and Neuromancer).

my iMac is Fred, he'ss been Fred for almost two years now.
he used to have other names... but I discovered Macintalk, and Fred is offically the coolest voice!
when I get my iBook it shall be Vicky, after Victoria. And my Power Mac will either be Fred mrk II, or Ralph not sure if I like Ralph though!
We'll see we'll see.
But Fred's name on the message board i admin is Fred The Killer iMac, his little rank picture (I do coustom rank pics for the majority of the reuglars) has an ilistrated iMac with the words under it.
iKill PCs
tis grand fun... infact...
thar ya go
heh
I love my lil iMac, oh and yes he is wearing a hat, that's his supertones Visor. I have an orange one he has a blue one
He likes Band merch, he's acctually gota a sticker for one of my fave bands (who's website I do by the way ) on the side of the case... the band thinks i"m nuts, esspecially when I told them, I needed two more stickers for when I get my Power Mac and my iBook.
hahahahaha
Although their keyboardist/guitar player wants to get a Mac, and they have a Mac talk for part of one of the songs on their new album.
It's a Christian rock band... not sure if you guys would like em, but hey if you wanna hear a band that has good taste in places to record their albums, check out Cadet: The Observatory, it comes out in September on the 24th
But yes, Fred is very well known amoung my friends... my one friend suggest that Fred is really a midget living inside the case who preforms all the functions... I think he's a morn
haha
the rest of my friends... excluding one who just bought a Dell all want Macs now... infact one got an eMac and LOVES it.
He named his Steve the Hyper eMac.
kinda mimicing mine
And we have a friend whohas Kari the Happy iBook... but... yeah... he's not so creative
hahaha

7 partitions on 2 disks on Cube:
Orion
Antares
Challenger
Aquarius
Columbia
Spider
Snoopy
3 partitions on 2 disks on PM7600:
Eagle
Falcon
Intrepid
One bonus point to anybody that came identify the common thread in the partition names. An extra bonus point if he/she can name which one doesn't quite belong with the rest, and why.

All pertain to NASA Apollo programs.
All are lunar excursion vehicles except Columbia, which is a command module.
To be honest, I did google a few of the names, but I did see a thread on connectivity among them.
Cool names and a worthy homage nonetheless.

Very good - both bonus points!
Most people don't remember Spider and Snoopy (Apollos 9 & 10), since they didn't land on the Moon. Also, nobody remembers that Challenger was the name of the Apollo 17 LM before it was the Space Shuttle that blew up...

My dual 800 "JJ's Computer"
My Celery machine "JJ's Computer"
My cyrix was "JJ's Computer"
My 486 laptop is "JJ's Computer"
and the 286 before that was also "JJ's Computer"
Now, though I nicknamed them, but I keep having to think of other names:
Dual 800 : JJ's Computer
Celery : either celery, silver computer, blue computer, or silver bomber
P133 : black machine
486 : My laptop
I guess I never liked the idea of permanently giving it a name, because what if I don't like that?!

I was prodded into naming my Mac a few years ago by a friend who hassled me like a drill sargeant until I did it.
I named her Yvonne, after my first crush at age 5 on Yvonne Craig, who played Batgirl on the 60's TV show Batman. The incredibly sexy Batgirl costume had me riveted to the set, and her secret identity of nice-girl librarian Barbara Gordon is probably why to this day I have a thing for nice-girl librarian types.
I actually got to meet her at DragonCon a few years ago, she was totally nice!

I like your thinking! I've been on a space theme for years now.
My desktop machines are space centers: Canaveral and Baikonur.
Portables are space stations: Salyut and Skylab. (Using Mir just seemed like asking for trouble.)
Other drives and peripherals are satellites/satellite programs: Corona, Vela, Telstar. The new iPod will either be Sputnik or Vanguard.

Similarly (though I might not count Whedon as a 'great' director), I have:
Kubrick (Quicksilver G4/867)
+ Strangelove (60GB internal)
My old laptop, sadly stolen in The Terrible Break-In Of June 2002 :
Scorsese (Lombard G4/500)
+ Kundun (3GB partition)
..my old 8600 was called Chaplin, and my insurance replacement PB G4/667, should it ever materialise, will be Coen. Or Bergman. Or maybe Coppola...
