For those of you that don't wan to have to sit through hours of compiles, there are now binaries of some of the Fink projects available for download. There aren't that many at the moment, but the list will increase as time goes on. Christoph Pfisterer is looking for feedback on it. Get it from http://fink.sourceforge.net/download.php

Once installed, apparently you can use apt just like in Debian, or something. I personally haven't checked it out, I have a perfectly working /sw tree

The command:

fink reinstall <package_name>

will cause fink to unpack the debian file that it created when the package was first installed. Chris is looking into distributing binaries but I don't know the status of that aspect of the project.

This is a compilation of recent messages on the fink-users list. You would do well to subscribe.

In a Terminal window, type

cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc

(Explanation: we have taken the file xinitrc in the directory/folder named /etc/X11/xinit and copied it to a file named .xinitrc in the User's home directory (which is denoted by ~ ).)

Now hopefully you can edit this file. If you fire up your favorite editor, and use the "open" menu, you should be able to find .xinitrc in your home directory.

.xinitrc should have the following line at the top:

source /sw/bin/init.sh

This is what I have at the end of my .xinitrc:

sawfish &
exec rxvt -geometry 15x2-0+20 -title Login -name login -exec zsh -f

which will put up a small rxvt in the top right corner of the screen, that you can exit from to kill your X session. If you don't have rxvt, replace it with xterm, it should take the same options.
