And if the answer is yes, is there recommended software to help combat it?

Nope! No adware or spyware on the Mac. Another reason to stay far far away from PCs.

I think you should define "spyware."

I'm not aware of any monitoring that is installed from a remote website or via eMail or is hidden in another application (aka Gator).

But there are monitoring packages that can be installed by someone with access to your Mac - the kind of things a suspicious parent, boss or spouse might install (possibly when you aren't around.)

Depends on what you are worried about.

Since I purchased my iBook 2 summers ago I honestly haven't given spyware a second thought. I have heard rumors of some apps, possibly Limewire? haveing spyware, but even the most basic research on versiontracker.com will turn up a lot of info on what apps to stay away from.

I have noticed that every time I launch Stuffit Expander it contacts Aladdin. Hopefully it is JUST checking for a new version and nothing else.

What about LiteSwitchX? I know they used to dig deep into your system and if you used a pirated serial # it would send them the info you entered when you first setup OS X.

spyware no.

Adware - only if you use AIM or Limewire rather than iChat and Acquisition.

A lot of apps "phone home", ostensibly checking for updates, including Stuffit, Real Player, Windows Media Player, Quicktime, Adobe Acrobat, and OS X itself. (Also, MS Office checks your LAN for other running copies.)

Little Snitch is a great tool with which to smite them.

Yes, adware and spyware are BIG TIME problems on my mac. There is, however, a solution.
