Not really, we're just foolishly charging the cliff. I'm not usually the one to be the bleeding edge, but what da heck.

Optimizing for a hella long time on my Pismo..... I'll drop by after the restart if it's all good.

Wondering if he's installing the rumored journaling file system,

I broke the cardinal rule to not update the OS before a major deadline... and all went well.

However, it does NOT correct the wonky Finder icon view mode.

I still have unnecessary empty spaces in the icon list despite having both snap-to-grid and arrange-by-kind checked.

TiBook 667 w/756MB

I've been running 10.2.2 (Build 6F21) now about 15 minutes... here's what I've noticed...

Snappier? Not really. This is probably just a placebo type thing, but for some reason the Mozilla text entry seems to be a bit faster when typing this. That can't have anything to do with the system upgrade, can it?

Mail-- (version 1.2.2 (v549/548)) Dont' notice any new features in the preferences. Could be my imagination but listings of long (>1000) messages seem to come up about a second faster. That's all I noticed.

iChat-- (version 1.0.1 v51.4) Dont' use it. Assume the many bugs were fixed (?)

Address Book-- (version 3.0.2 (v216)) don't use it. Didn't notice anything special.

Sherlock-- (version 3.5.1 (v3.5.1/1.0.1) Didn't notice anything new.

Journaling-- not gonna turn it on. Someone said that to do so, type the following in the terminal. (Unverified)

sudo diskutil enableJournal /

Hmm. Maybe this is kind of a crappy first review, but I guess what I'm really reporting is that the upgrade seems to have worked and though the system feels the same to me, at least it didn't hurt anything.

24.4 MB and it's basically the same. Then again, as I said, it's been about 15 minutes so I'm sure there are benefits that are as yet unknown... As of right now the Knowlege Base article describing the changes isn't up yet.

(ok, I waited 10 more minutes before posting this. I swear, text entry in Mozilla is faster! Am I going out of my mind or is there something new that might account for this?)

Ya, that's the journaling enable command. I'm living dangerously today:

[MOOF:~] thg% sudo diskutil enableJournal /
Password:
Allocated 8192K for journal file.
Journaling has been enabled on /
[MOOF:~] thg%

So I guess I gotta pull the power during a massive disk write, to test this, right?

If you're going to wait for this download then I hope this update offers some noticable fixes for you. 24.4 megs is just not a practical download for most people. I remember seeing a statistic on how many households have broadband and it is very very small. But most users don't really care about updates, regardless of whehter they have broadband or not.

The Knowledge Base article for 10.2.2 said that to install, you cannot have a blank Admin. Password, and must change it to something else. I didn't, and the installation seemed to work perfectly. Anybody know if that's going to cause me trouble, or if they were just wrong?

OK here are my 10.2.2 experiences...

Snappier? Haven't really noticed, so I don't really think so

Mail-- (version 1.2.2 (v549/548)) I haven't noticed anything different, but I don't use it profusely enough to judge the system performance.

iChat-- (version 1.0.1 v51.4) I haven't noticed ANYTHING different, and that little "bug" in the custom away messages is still there (where the + button says Add A Buddy).

Address Book-- (version 3.0.2 (v216)) Opens alittle faster, runs alittle smoother I guess.

Sherlock-- (version 3.5.1 (v3.5.1/1.0.1) Starts faster and channels load quicker.

Journaling-- I turned it on, and I haven't noticed any changes, whether or not I should, I don't know.

Finder-- seems that browsing through my harddrive is alittle quicker.

System Specs are in my sig...

You should not be seeing an error during diskutil enableJournal; however, you can check to see if it's really on by opening Disk Utility, selecting the volume, and looking at the Format: item on the Information tab.

For those enabling journaling: be advised that no disk utilities currently support repairing a journaled HFS+ volume, including Disk Utility and fsck. In theory, you shouldn't need any disk utilities with journaling; however, it's new and you may encounter issues. If you do need to repair a journaled volume for some reason, use fsck_hfs -f [device id].

Here are my first impressions:

Mail seems to switch between folders a lot faster than before.

iChat now brings up a new instant message instead of a new chat when selecting the buddy in the drop down menu item. Finally!!

Sherlock appears to draw the maps and directions faster when switching between the results.

The "missing text" problem has certainly been reduced in Chimera 0.6. The Register and Railhead Design both almost always generated missing text in almost every browser on my machine. Those rendering problems seem to be gone with the 10.2.2 update, at least so far.

Agreed, I was always getting missing text in RailHead as well, but all is better now.

Great update!

Hope this fixes my mail. I have a cable provider for access and email and I've had to use MS Entourage to get mail. OS X Mail won't do it.
I'll let ya know. That's the only reason I'm trying it.
Although, the missing graphics and text in IE is awfully annoying so am glad that is fixed.

As crazy as it sounds, Aqua seems to be much more responsive with 10.2.2 for reasons I don't know. Either that, or it's because I haven't used my Pismo 500 in the past couple of days.
