When the ibook sleeps, is it basicaly off? I mean, when it's asleep, is it ok to trasport it short distances in a carrying sleeve?

Never turn mine off, close the lid, throw it in a bag, jump on bicycle, go to work etc.

Yeah, I once took a serious header off my bike with my iBook in my backpack. Absolutely no problems! And, blood cleans off of them, no problem.
Cheers!

Here's some more about Sleep: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25801
I always use sleep, and never shut down. It's totally safe, and REALLY convenient to just open the lid and go. Just be sure that the computer is completely asleep (the sleep light will pulse) before you move it, stick it in a bag, etc., giving the hard drive's heads the opportunity to lock properly.
