I thought about getting an iPhone after returning my iPod video due to a bad screen. Decided to research the hack options. Seen some post of wifi problems after the hacks. I decided to call AT&T corporate about iphone with prepaid until my service with my current provider ends. Was told no on the prepaid AND was told the wifi and the phone functions are tied together so if the phone doesn't have service, no wifi. Can someone who has hacked ther iphone log into a wifi hot spot/ home wireless network and verify that it works? Just doesn't sound possible but then again, apple could be getting sneaky by locking these phones down.

Unlocked iPhones work fine (cell and wifi), and wifi works even when there's no signal.

That isn't the brightest question.

I got an iPhone from the states and unlocked it myself, working just fine in Hong Kong on Smartone - Vodaphone.
Had to update the ABPhoneFormats.plist to get the phone number to display in HK format

I never installed 3rd party apps, but I did unlock. When Apple bricked unlocked phones I installed a bunch of 3rd party apps in deviance and will stick with 1.0.2 until the dust settles.

You sure showed them!!!
In all seriousness though, I feel bad for people who have unlocked and now have no other recourse. Did you unlock to use with T-Mobile, or out of USA? Either way, I didn't think Apple was going to come down this hard. And now it seems as if you guys are stuck with the old firmware forever (or until the hackers get it working again with 1.1.1, which I find quite unlikely.)
EDIT: oh wait, was the word "deviance" or did you mean "defiance"...I read it as defiance at first, hence my reply, but if you meant deviance than disregard that reply.
