Hey, the title tells the story, so how do I find out the speed of it (eg 5400rpm, 7200rpm, whatever). I'm thinking about getting a bigger harddrive and I want one of the same speed so I can get a similar battery life.

While you're here, how much less battery life would I get with a 7200rpm drive, assuming mine's a 5400rpm drive?

Open the app System Profiler, under Hardware choose Serial-ATA (or whatever category has your HDD), then click your HD (hitachi, etc.). View its model number then google it or visit the manufacturer's page to find the speed.

Don't know whether that comment was supposed to be a 'you stupid t***, find out in system profiler' or a comment which didn't mean to make you look like youre a t***, but just stating the obvious.

I'd tried system profiler btw, it just didn't say.

Thanks cold warrior for telling me properly anyway, I just wondered if there was anywhere on the mac that would tell me, but apparently not.

I looked but didn't find any way. Maybe I'm missing it too. I also checked the application MacTracker, but it doesn't have factory or Apple-available HDD RPM information.

Would this harddrive (http://www.morecomputers.com/extra.asp?pn=ST9320421AS) work in my macbook?

It says it has 16mb cache and something about 3.0gb/s transfer rate or something, is that compatible with my macbook?

Thanks

Easy there, cowboy. I typed the first idea that came to mind. I didn't have an impression of your acumen either way.

Just because it wasn't the greatest idea in the world doesn't require you to be indignant about it.

Anyway, I gave it it a try, and I'm stumped. Getting "info" in Disk Utility is equally fruitless.

There's just one further step needed: Copy the name of the HD from System Profiler and then google it. That'll get you what you want.

For a replacement SATA 2.5" HD, try zipzoomfly.com or newegg.com and be sure to check all the threads in this forum about laptop HDs, 'cause the questions are mostly already answered there. You'll find links to articles about laptop speed tests, etc.

No change.

Yes; "0.95cm (H)" is the important figure, not cache or SATA speed.
