I'm a former PC users, just got a mac pro a few months ago.. love it until now. Shortly after powering the MAC on, a black rectangle (unfinished window? Hung Process?) covers the upper left part of my screen(s) (running dual monitors, it does it on both).

I'm a software engineer, know linux/unix okay, but OS X is a new experience. There is no way to get to the little Apple logo on the top left bar, the mouse disappears when you place it over (under?) the black box, so I randomly click in there and eventually I can power down my MAC.

I've tried holding the shift key on bootup (safe mode has it too).. it is there almost immediately after power up, though for a 1/2 second when the screen starts (before the Lodading OS X bar comes up), it isn't there.

If anyone has a clue, I would greatly appreciate it, I'm at my wits end.. and my apple support is worthless as my MAC is personal, and they close why I am at work (great thinking there apple.. not everyone buys them for work).

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help.. and if I don't get any, well... never mind ;-)

Thanks

You coud try repairing permissions, that's the standard Step One for problem solving.

You can do this by launching Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder), select the volume, then click the "Repair Permissions" button.

Just FYI, it's just Mac. Some people get confused, but it's not an acronym like IBM, it's just short for Macintosh.

On the Mac try not to over think the problem. It is most likely something very simple.

I had a similar experience on a plane. I thought my PB went to sleep and I try to wake it up. it wouldn't wake. Then my GF hit the dimmer/brighten buttons on the keyboard and the screen came back on. I thought I was the mac guy.

I'm glad you problem got figured out.

real
With some loud music + a friend to chat nearby you can get alot done. - but jezz, I'd avoid it if I had the choice---- If only real people came with Alpha Channels.......:)
