The thread title is misleading. Should read "Oil Company Against Bio-Fuels Made From Food Crop"
Eric Holthusen, a fuels technology manager for the Asia-Pacific region, said the company's research unit, Shell Global Solutions, has developed alternative fuels from renewable resources that use wood chips and plant waste rather than food crops that are typically used to make the fuels.

Whether you have an area with forest you turn into bio-fuel or you have an area with food crops you turn into bio-fuel – neither feeds a starving child in Africa. For bio-fuel the most efficient (and sustainable) plant should be used.

Each of us is a walking talking oil consumption entity.
We eat it, we drink it. We wear it. We ride on it and in it. We watch it and listen to it. We work with it and play with it.
And the oil industry knows this. They have us over a barrel. LITERALLY.
What are we going to do? Stop using oil?

I think we should recruit a volunteer corps of Americans to go to Africa and physically prevent Africans from coupling. Just walk into their huts and pull them apart. Throw cold water on them. Then go to the next hut and do the same there.
That's the only way we can stop the starving children and prevent AIDS in Africa.
(For the clueless, I'm not serious.)

On a serious note, what they need is Planned Parenting and condoms.

I think I saw something recently about someone finding that a certain kind of algae happens to be the best thing to make bio-diesel out of. Supposedly it was much better suited to it than other crops that have been used, and isn't a food crop. Of course recycling waste oil from fryers and what-not is obviously a very good way to go.

Yes, it's outlined on one of this thread's fine links.

Africa, the only continent where you can walk into any structure and find people ****in on the tables. At all hours in every position. Go into a hospital bathroom, two people going at it like rabid weasels. In the relief trucks on the base. It's like a rolling brothel.
You just can't make this stuff up.
I have yet to see this in any other part of the world.
And I read a report on butanol.
