Anyone used the FW800 with an adapter? I bought one from eBay, cheap, and it doesn't work. Since my iMac is a refurb, and I have no FW 800 devices, I'm not sure if it really works.
I have seen some complaints on Amazon about some FW800 to 400 adapters not being Mac compatible, but I thought I'd ask here.

All my FW800 -> FW400 cables work fine on my iMac Core i7.
I have a FW800 hub and a FW400 hub working well on this setup too.

Note also that Snow Leopard had some FW issues with some FW drives. It could be the drive.

Monoprice.com has dirt cheap firewire 800 to firewire 400 cables. All the ones i've used worked great.

A cable won't do my 3G iPod any good. I need to adapt to use the docking cable. At least I can still sync via USB and charge it by the power adapter.

Yes. The bus is noted as up to 800MBps.
Here is the adapter I bought:
ebay
My guess is the $7 adapter I waited 2 weeks to arrive from Hong Kong is junk. I sent a message to the seller saying it didn't work. He will probably call me "Vile" like he did in all his negative feedback responses, but if I'm lucky he will either send me another one or refund my money.

I bought an adapter that I expected to work.

You just haven't found the right cable.

There's also a Sonnet adapter that works fine.

I've emailed the eBayer from whom I bought the adapter complaining it doesn't work. I'll likely give negative feedback and ask for a refund through paypal.
In the meantime, I'm keeping my eyes out for a FW800 chassis plus USB for backups. I'll get a cable at that time.

Good luck with that, paypal will likely tell you to F-off. I never use paypal anymore, they've ripped me off too many times.

I'm curious how the paypal refund went? Did paypal tell you you're out of luck, since you got "something", and they only ensure you receive goods, they don't ensure the quality or condition of the goods you receive.

It didn't. The seller wanted me to return the adapter. His english was so bad ("I didn't say no can have iMac!") that i decided to just eat the $7 and buy a different one from a seller who tested his on Macs and was in the USA. The second on worked fine.
Paypal doesn't do anything in a dispute.
