You know, I'm a big Mac OS X fan but I don't want to spend money for the new MS Office, so I have returned to Classic for now. One thing I have noticed is how fast my CPU is under 9.2.2.

BTW, Audion 2.6.1 works great for me. No skipping at all.

Easy. Most the programs I use day-in and day-out have not been "carbonized." I find the OS far more sluggish than 9, even on a new G4 with 640 MB of RAM. I find the new OS far less intuitive and more Windows-like, something I don't care for. I totally agree with you 100% about all the productivity stuff... I also use 9.2.2 ALL the time for all your reasons.

However, there is a little trick to make your mouse faster... www.versiontracker.com has "Mouse Zoom Pref Pane" http://www.versiontracker.com/morein...d=12205&db=mac

It allows you to ultra-accelerate your mouse... to install, you go to your home directory Library folder and create folder "PrefPanes" or something like that, then drag it in.

There is one thing that I hate about the current mouse behavior in OS X, is that the mouse speed is not directly proportional to the speed you move your mouse (the mouse "accelerates" dependent on the speed you move - this very very very bad!!)

For me, I'm going to probably have to wait until Microsoft releases some special mouse driver for my Optical Wheel Mouse until this acceleration problem is eliminated tho.

In general, I only use OS X as a "toy", and also in the very rare occasion when I have to do something crazy like use X-Windows to log into a UNIX server using xFree86 under Darwin. By the way,... its kindof cool how I do this - I don't even use Aqua!!! X-Windows can run right on top of Darwin using window managers such as blackbox or icewm etc, i like ice. I used "Fink" to install all the cool stuff. However, there is no graphics acceleration when using X-Windows on top of Darwin. Does anyone know how to turn on video acceleration under this? I know it works when Aqua loads. Maybe there is a manual way to turn on the drivers for my ATI card?

I can't figure out how things like iCab work on OS X. Everytime I try to use it, I have to unstuff it and make a new "disk image", which I don't understand at all. Why can't I load it on my HD so that it's always ready for usage? Is this typical with all apps on OS X?

Besides that, I just haven't had time to set up all my apps for OS X. As far as I know, even photoshop is not available for it yet.

I liked using OS X at the applestore at Tysons Corner, but the setup process on my own iBook was too much of a pain in the ass. I don't appreciate it when something that I paid for requires me to enter personal info before I can start using it.

Heh. This confused me a bit when I first started using OS X. But really, it's quite simple - just drag the application out of the Disk Image and onto your hard drive (into your Applications folder, most likely). Then you can get rid of the Disk Image.

At work where Quark, Photoshop, Dreamweaver rule, and no-one's about to shell out the xtrabucks for MS Office for X just yet, it's 9.1 for the forseeable.

At home well it's still 9.1 mostly, since I need to do a major reformat to upgrade to OSx 10.1. After that, I'll try to stick in 10.1 at least 50%

I tried 10.1 and photoshop 6.0 on a tiBook today and it was pretty appealing.

Photoshop runs fast enough for me. BBEdit is excellent. The CLI and associated apps is awesome. I only boot into OS 9 to watch VCDs or to watch a DVD on the TV.

I was die-hard 9.2 and then one day (when I got my iPod), I decided to just go straight-up X... Haven't looked back and only boot into OS 9.2 to do sound editing and burning cds in Adaptec Jam (which hopefully will be ported into OS X some day)...

Once you really start using X, you really won't want to go back (of course that is if all of your apps are still only in 9).

Man... understand me here, okay?

I'd switch to OSX in a second if it was as fast as OS9, had the same applications available, and let me customise Aqua (not "theme" wise, screw that, but ditch the damn fading menus, etc).

OSX just gets completely shitted on by OS9 everywhere that matters.

9.2 to work and X to have fun. If classic had scroll wheel support I could prob use that but it doesn't and I need to pay the bills, so it's 9 for me.

Photoshop X is dog slow in beta I hope they speed it up some by release. Even then, X is slow compared to 9 in most operations, especially surfin the net. (IE sucks, OW is awesome but slow-I won't touch the other browsers)

X will have to wait for a G5, because I won't notice it's slowness then
