SAH have problems with hardware that may be a long or short outage depending on when they can get replacement kit.
May 1, 2007
Happy May Day. Unfortunately for us it's been "Mayday! Mayday!" At 4:43 (PDT) this morning, our science database machine, thumper, became hasenfeffer. It currently refuses to acknowledge that it has any disk drives. Since the controllers are attached to the motherboard, major repairs will probably be required. No work can be created until this machine gets fixed. We are on the phone with Sun now in hopes of securing repair or a replacement. More info in Technical News.

Hard to say, it sounds like they might be back up by this weekend.
Just talked with Matt and Jeff. It looks like we'll have a replacement machine within a few days, but I can't give details just yet because things are still in process.

...which is crap. I run out in another 3 hours or so. I'm in the middle of a benchmarking run. It takes 6 weeks to max out. This means I have just wasted 2.5 weeks....which could have been Folding. Grrrrr. This happened when I tried to benchmark my OC quad win box too. I eventually gave up and just moved it to Folding out of frustration.
Edit: Oh yeah...PS: I just broke 8000 in only 2.5 weeks!

Huzzah! Drink one for me too. You have a *lot* more to go!
I hit 2505 with my iMac (2.33ghz), and version 7.2 for C2D of alexkan's most excellent application. He has an even better one in the works! But keep in mind, S@H scoring has changed slightly. So things won't be (heh) apples to apples.

It is still out pacing the other 3 computers combined.
Of course the entire web site seems to be down this morning.

I still have 156 to process on my iMac, that should keep me busy for about 4 days if I continue to average about 1.25 hours or so.

Hi all!
I like to use SETI for stress-testing new hardware, and there's nothing like Alex' code to tickle every bit of silicon in a machine.
With the current outage continuing and the need to start a stress-test soon, I'm looking for alternatives. Particularly, I'm looking for a project with highly optimized workers for intel Macs. I'd be grateful for any recommendations you may have!
TIA,
Ron

Both of my machines will need something to do shortly. I can switch my modest resources over to Predictor@Home or Rosetta. Which of those TeamMacNN efforts needs the help?

I've still got some work left but I've dusted off my old RC5-72 account that I haven't used in several
years and am giving that a shot on one machine. Looks like I haven't reported a work unit to that
project in several years. Never did run it on the G5 so....could be fun.

Looks like the stats are not updating currently either, SETI shows me on the top computer list about 200 points under what it reports me on my computer page.

Good news! From the SETI home page:
May 4, 2007
Great news! Sun Microsystems is coming to the rescue and will be replacing our inoperative science data base server. They are preparing the machine now and will be rushing it to us on Monday. Once we have the machine up and the database recovered, we can start sending work out again. Details on the server crash and our recovery from it can be found in Technical News.
Thank you, Sun! Meanwhile, I'm still looking for an alternate project with highly efficient intel Mac workers. Any suggestions?
Cheers,
Ron

Thanx! Are there any 3rd-party optimized apps for Folding, or is simply stock from Stanford? If so, am I assuming correctly that the SMP-beta would be the right choice for Xeon-based Macs?

apparently Sun Microsystems is donating a new server and shipping it to seti on Monday, they will have to install drives (12 I think) and set it up, so we could expect things to be back to normal by the end of the week.

Edit. ooops - just noticed halimedias post. It's still early here.

Front Page News
May 9, 2007
Update: Our science database server died on Tuesday, May 1st. We haven't been able to create new workunits since then (though we are still accepting completed results). Sun is graciously replacing this server. The bad news is, despite earlier claims, it won't be here until Friday the 11th, which means the earliest we'll be creating new work is Monday the 14th. Thank you for your continued patience! Updates, discussion, and more information about this and other server-related topics can be found in Technical News.

SIMAP is now out of work for this month. More due June 1st.
If you are looking for long or short WUs, then go with Rosetta. You can set the run time yourself from 1 to 24 hours.

I don't think you can currently trust the server status page - see Matt Lebofsky's recent rant about python. The above network graph definitely tells you what's up. NB: inbound and outbound traffic are apparently reversed in this graph, but it's definitely the right one.

Update: I've received work on about half of my clients by now, but most have run out again - no wonder, considering the pent-up demand. Looks like my SIMAP WUs will be done just about when SETI returns back to normal...

I have been getting about 50 WUs according to my account information on S@H. According to my BOINC clients, none to date. This is happening to several others too. There is some speculation it is due to 5.9.10. I moved my dual quad back to 5.8.17, to see if that will make a difference.

I've received 44 WUs since yesterday, and most of them have been crunched and reported again. In other words, I don't see the problem you're seeing. Using 5.4.9 CLI.

On closer examination of my logs, I'm seeing a number of download errors. In most cases, the WUs that reported dl errors have been at least partially downloaded to the client, so I assume that the dl servers are dropping connections. This has happened in the past under heavy load, and shouldn't come as a surprise.
NB: I've noticed before that WUs indicated as sent to a client have actually just been allocated to that client as a result of a client request. The download happens whenever possible thereafter, which can be a long time if connections are repeatedly dropped and the client backs-off for longer and longer intervals before attempting to re-dl the WUs.

They status page says there is over 65000 units ready to send, only problem is that Bruno seems to have taken a holiday and is not doing anything right now. I have units that are done that cannot upload and units that have been trying to download since late last night. Everything is getting an http error.
