My harddrive failed one hour ago (making loud periodic click sounds every second). I´m unable to run first aid (no mount point is indicated for the OS X volume). At the moment i´m running it from CD shuffling everything from the non corrupted areas to an external backup server. I tried reinstall of Tiger but system actualization option was greyed out (i suppose due to the non detectable mount point of the partition), then i tried archive and install but the installation process was aborted. Any ideas what to do?

And in case i have to buy a new HD any suggestions on a brand, speed, capacity and so on?

Any advice will be highly appreciated!

Hardware: Tibook 667 DVI, stock IBM travelstar hd

Get the fastest best one you can afford.

My hd died this morning too. Hardware test gives me errors, Disk utility doesn't see it.

In case? Don't even try to reuse that drive...it's not worth it.

Thanks you´re right. It died later this day at an amazing speed. Within minutes cklicking turned into crunching and then exitus.

Few minutes ago i went with a 5200 rpm Fujitsu 8 MB cache 60 GB (larger drives, or models from WD or seagate weren´t available imediatly....)

i need my book..

Yeah, saw it but i have the manual, thanks for providing the link to the document, budster! BTW installing the drive was a snap, everything got smoothly into place in about ten minutes. Right now i´m partitioning it. Apples hardware never ceases to amaze me.

Any comments on my chosen drive?

The problem with the faster drives were:

-not immediatly available, 4 days shipping
-7200 rpm drive were not listed on AVITOS HP (and i also don´t want my silent Tibook to mutate into a loud one )

All good thinking on your part. I had not considered that.

You obviously made the best decision. I wish you many years of more happiness with your TiBook!

Ciao.
