I know a few people in here (myself included) have been waiting to see the R520 based ATI cards be announced on the Mac, unfortunately the inquirer is reporting that ATI have cancelled the AGP version of these cards.

*sigh* hardware H264 and 2-3* 850XL performance sounded soo good too!

Excellent, this must mean the new PMs based on the 970MP will have PCIe slots.

Seriously though, I've gotten the impression that the Inquirer isn't the most accurate rumor source.

I'm still eager for the R520 over the recently announced 7800, assuming ATI enable hardware H264 in the mac drivers that is...

The 520 isn't even out for the PC yet, is it? I mean other than the prototype cards that ATI showed a few months back.

Nvidia is eating ATI's LUNCH right now. ATI had a great period around the 9700 timeframe while Nvidia choked on the 5200. But these days, it's not even close.

The 7800 is blowing DOORS on anything ATI can offer on the PC side, performance wise. It's probably the best option.

The 520 is available on the PC as the X1800.

It's true that the 7800 is faster than the X1800 however recent driver updates added 30% performance on ATI side and there is a lot more to come aparently. Video wise the hardware H264 hasn't even been enabled yet (due before end of the year) so when that hits there will be a big bonus there.

ATI are saying that they have tons of headroom in the hardware and just need the software to catch up. A moot point right now though - it hasn't been announced for the mac so its all wishful thinking!

So if you had a PowerMac G5 AGP version and wanted to upgrade, what IS
your best option for the best video? I know the X800 is available and the
X850 is/was a BTO option (don't know if you can buy it outside of the Apple
online store).

What are your options? Nvidia 6800? X800/850?

What would you do?

I went with the X800. It's faster, quieter, draws less power, and $100 cheaper. It'll still drive the 30", and sports an ADC, for backwards compatibility.

Also, the image quality (for analog displays) is far better on the ATI. nViidia still has problems with their RAMDACs.
If engineers ruled the world, the trains might not run on time, but they'd go really fast, and when they derailed, would explode and kill thousands!

ATI and Nvidia leapfrog each other every couple of months. Most of the griping comes from PC-based fanboys who want to wave their e-penis around with game benchmarks.

It's not every couple months. Nvidia has pretty much been in the lead since the 6800 was introduced. On the PC side, their SLI is absolutely tearing things up.

Newer ATI cards also allow to use two cards in concert to enhance performance.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
