Audio streams just arbitrarily stopped working in Safari. I can't play music from PureVolume, and videos play on MySpace, but without their audio tracks.

Any ideas?

Give us some more information about what types of errors you are getting and what software you have installed.

It looks like PureMusic.com uses a player written in Macromedia Flash.
Does the player not load when you try to play a song or does it appear to be playing but you can't hear anything?

Can you hear audio from your mac when using other applications?

Thanks for the reply:

I have no problems playing audio with other applications: just media that plays through Safari and IE. The player appears to load, but no audio is output. With other embedded media, video will play without the accompanying audio track.

Very odd.

Did you by chance happen to recently install the Flip4Mac WMV Qucktime component?

Try Quitting Safari, then launching GarageBand. Quit GarageBand and relaunch Safari and then try to play a stream.

Same thing happened to me, although I lost sound not only in Safari but in IE and WMP. Movies play back fine in the finder. The only thing I did was install Stuffit 10. I have already deleted prefs for everything, reinstalled QT, WMP and now DivX codec. No fix.

Here's another interesting thing. Apple trailers play fine in Safari which leads me to think that this is a codec issue. RealPlayer doesn't work either and WMP says that the clips might not play because they used a different codec. Even Google video is without sound which I think is the Flash player. Files that played fine before now don't work. Where is the interface between app-codecs and the system?

Solution found! Launch GarageBand once and the sound problems go away. I found this in another forum. No idea why it works.

I'm experiencing the same problem. I'm trying the Garageband thing right now, Gunnar.

But just curious, Tee, but what about the Flip4WMV player you mention?
