If they're unlocked..... and backwards compatible with US 2G networks... may be worth the wait and pick on up next time I'm in the UK.

Haha, yeah right. I'll buy one for every European who posts in this thread if it's true.

(Oh, it better not be true. )

Actually it wouldn't surprise me if they announced European carriers soon, but it won't be a new version of the iPhone.

Why not ?

1) Apple has six more months to develop and finalize 3G
2) 3G / UMTS is more readily available in Europe than EDGE. It makes plain sense.

I think they've just been working on getting this one out the door. It just doesn't make sense to release an upgraded version a day after their big debut. Does that make sense to you? If it does, will you bet on it?

Jobs said iPhone Europe in 3rd quarter 2007, Asia 2008. To me, that says EuroPhone = AmericaPhone and released very soon, whereas Asiaphone = new version with 3g in 9 months or so. And I believe 3g penetration in Japan is much higher than in the US or Europe. Of course, when the 3g version comes to Asia it will also be sold in Europe and the US. That's my guess for the timeline anyway.

I'm not getting one until it goes HSPDA (or at least UMTS). Hopefully there is a shred of truth to this.

Then again, if carriers could actually get 200 Kb/s speeds out of EDGE like some of the AT&T rumours suggest, then EDGE wouldn't be that bad.

I agree. What are people intending to do with their iPhones ?
Watch HD movies in realtime ?
Download warez ?

200 kbit/s is not bad for most informational surfing.

AT&T's EDGE speed boost confirmed

"anecdotes within the past day show a sudden increase in real-world speeds, with some reporting connections as quick as 270Kbps. The increase isn't yet known to be universal but has been tested in multiple New York City boroughs and other major cities."

Personally, I have always thought they would release a 3G version here. It just won't be acceptable here in the UK without it as we have the infrastructure and there is a huge amount of competition out there with 3G/HSDPA.

We also have a lot less Wifi (particularly free) here compared to the US. Thus, it needs 3G to be a viable internet appliance in the UK.

They have only a few months to find a decent 3G chip, or to have one fabbed.

Sounds tight, but of course they will have worked on this for some time. It's only that Jobs' way of sounding as if they wouldn't have found a satisfactory solution yet that worries me.

I'm from the UK

it would be awesome if they did that, I'm with T-Mobile and wouldn't have to move carriers and already have the unlimited web 'n walk

I would be really surprised if the EU version doesn't have a accessible sim card. There is a fairly large market of 'early adopters' who drop substantial cash for the latest handset. buying the thing almost outright not via contract, and transfer by just swapping the sims over (thus keeping some address-book numbers and more importantly there number). Locking the phone to one network and not having a sim card locks out this market.

The US version already has an accessible sim card...
What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

(btw a Spaniard who quotes Izzard.. I'm impressed! I haven't noticed many Izzard fans here hehe)

BTW I don't expect a European launch announcement any time soon. Nor can I imagine how Apple can give one or two European carriers exclusive contracts. Five or ten maybe..

The US will get an announcement of available 3G when Apple releases it to the FCC for certification. That will be when you'll know when one will happen for the US market. Judging from the time for the certification for the EDGE version I'd bet we see an announcement before the end of Summer to allow a MacWorld intro.

Indeed, I am willing to pay for a iPhone without a plan or sim-lock,so I can just use my simcard and keep my number.

I hope Apple does understand we have a completely different market overhere.

Another one from Europe posting .
I wouldn't really use 3G because the iPhone already has wi-fi. But I do want more 3rd party apps.

No, but I'm in the UK so you better hand it over to me!

I can believe they'd announce a release date, but I'm sure there'll be no mention of 3G. That may emerge close to release...

Slight problem with this scenario: Carphone Warehouse isn't a carrier, it isn't even a virtual carrier. It's merely a shop which sells mobile phones and suggests the best network for you. They pride themselves on being independent of any network. If Apple were to team up with CW, I would have to assume that to mean you can get the iPhone on any network so long as you order it through either the Apple Store or Carphone Warehouse (which, FWIW would be a SUPERB way to do it!)

Actually CPW is a quasi-MVNO for O2 contracts. If you sign up for O2 through CPW, your bills are from CPW and you have to talk to CPW for support etc.
