I've been using Time Machine for a few months with no problems until a month ago when I got the following error doing a normal backup. I just got back from a trip and reinstalled 10.6 over my previous installation (I guess it's the "archive and install" from 10.5 essentially) with no effect. Disk Utility says my source and destination drives are both good. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I can do to restore TM functionality?

BTW, the drives are identical models (e.g. 640GB WD Blue SATA drives) and I can do a backup with Synk Backup or any other backup program except TM.

I don't understand. Are you saying this error occurs every time you try to back up or that this happened just the one time "a month ago?"

Can you enter Time Machine itself and see older backups? Have you manually tried removing this TM disk in the TM preferences and then adding it again?

How full is the source disk? TM may not have room for more than one backup, because your TM drive isn't bigger than the primary drive.

It would help to check Console messages when TM tries to run. To see what the exact error is.

TM gives me this error every time I do a backup and the drive has plenty of space...I've even formatted it and it comes up with the error. The source has 308GB filled out of 640GB so there's plenty of free space (the TM drive is also 640GB).

I'm totally confused right now...just formatted and reinstalled OSX (10.6.4) onto the drive TM previously could not copy to, formatted the old boot drive to be the backup drive, and tried a TM backup. It failed like before. This is with the drives reversed. I did copy quite a few ~/User/Library/ files and archived the System and User Library folders in my Documents folder. This should work... Here's the output of my console with "backupd" as the query. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Edit: I saw the iTunes files it seemed to fail after attempting to copy (in the artwork cache). Just deleted iTunes (it was a backup) and will retry...

Deleting the iTunes library fixed the problem...luckily that was a backup of an older library and not my primary iTunes library so all's good. Although I hated reinstalling OSX, it's always nice to have a less cluttered system.
