Hi All,
Can anyone recommend a 2-bay USB 3 JBOD enclosure for SATA drives up to 4GB? (that I can source here in the UK?)
I need one that can stay on all of the time (that doesn't go to sleep), and that doesn't have too loud a fan (one that cycles up and down with temperature would be ideal). I don't need anything that is high performance, as it'll be accessed relatively infrequently: it'll be holding two drives onto which I'll be archiving old photo projects, but that still need to be occasionally accessed in Lightroom.
I realise that there are many high end enclosures out there (this one is going to replace a Sonnet 500P 5-bay eSATA enclosure, which has died), but I'm hoping that I can find one that runs about £50-£60 (give or take).
And while I'm asking, how about 4-bay JBOD enclosures as well?
Any stand outs out there that you can recommend?
Thanks for any advice!
Chas

Reason: forgot to mention 4GB requirement)

Every time I see a newegg link, I get jealous! (no newegg here in the uk, sadly).
Interestingly, I did spot that enclosure on Amazon UK, badged "HornetTech". It sure looks like the same unit (wow, nice price difference for the same unit: £58 from newegg, £89.50 from Amazon UK, grr):
Hornettek Enterprise 4X (Quad Bay Enclosure/12TB Maximum Capacity/Hot Swappable): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories
There are several reviews on this product's Amazon UK page that indicate it's not a good fit for Macs (spin down problems esp). You're not having any issues? And do you have 4TB drives in it?
Thanks for the reply!

There won't be spin down problems if you don't use Green drives. I used it on a 2007 Mac Mini for a very long time and you uncheck the "spin down hard drives" option in Energy Saver. It is currently hooked up to an Intel NUC running Ubuntu Server.
The max drives I had in it are 3TB but last I checked, I'm pretty sure there was a firmware upgrade for it that supported 4TB drives.
edit: the product page from the manufacturer claims 4TB: http://www.vantecusa.com/en/product/view_detail/488

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

@abbaZaba: sadly, three of the drives i question are WD Greens! I've only seen complaints in the Amazon reviews about spin down problems and Macs, do you know exactly what happens, by any chance? Thanks for letting me know that there is a 4TB firmware fix, that makes these very attractive.
@P, it's not actually Newegg in the UK, it's just that they'll ship to the UK (with accompanying price hike, import duty and all that). It's Newegg's low prices that I was hoping to see here :-)
Thanks for the info all!
