maybe the rule should be made into 640 by 480. that seems more reasonable and nicer to look at. easier convert too, since most people take pics horizontally, not vertical.

i think we're more concern about file size here. if everyone start putting large img here and there... some ppl with low bandwidth will suffer...

You have to be able to host/upload the image somewhere, and then in your post here link to that file on the server where you (or someone else) hosts the image.
If you can do/did that then in your post write '[ img ] here goes the link to the uploaded image without spaces [ /img ]',
but remember to respect the Rules for Inline images , upload an image of the right size, and not too heavy (like 20 - 30k or so).
Good luck !

It is a Crumpler School Hymn semi rigid sleeve. no pockets, just a sleeve. feel free to ask any questions, i will try my best to answer them. these are nice sleeves, but it is not very snug. i dont mind the size, but i am still looking for a dense foam sheet i can cut out to fit my laptop in so it will be snug and surrounded by foam all around.

Hey guys. Thanks for replying to my post. I am a 16 year old junior in high school. I got an iPod for Xmas and was hooked to the whole Mac scene from there one. I could not take my eyes off the Powerbook. Now please don't call me a spoiled little bratt whos parents bought him a 2400$ computer. No No NO. I had to pay 2100$ for it, and that was after lots and lots of work. Thats right, I joined the community on my own, so this makes the laptop so much better. Thanks for everyone for their help, and I look forward to the future w/ my Mac!

lol. yea. we're just saying you're very lucky to have a PB.

and i remember when i was 12 or 13, my first PC was a 486DX2 66mhz. with 4MB of memory, i think, and about a gigabyte of HDD. remember being so happy when i get 4GB. and my dad telling me he'll buy me this great thing called a CD-ROM. LOL. and i even got to use Windows 3.1 for a bit, and had to endure Win 95.

those were the days.

Hey PatsPlace24... Congratulations on the PB... I'm so jealous of your young self... lol. But you worked hard for it... wow you saved up $2100 on your own. When I was your age I could hardly get past a hundred. I'm buying the 15 inch PB today... it will be the one with the combo drive though. I already got a G5 with the superdrive.. and I plan on buying a firewire powered external dvd burner later down the road for the PB. If anyone knows where I can find an external duallayer dvd burner... powered off firewire or usb... let me know. I'll need it down the road for mobile video production.

May I ask why you chose glass for the base?
Theoretically I guess it looks good, but in this case it is covered by your laptop.
Readily accessible? Cheap?

The reason I ask is that glass isn't particularly great at conducting heat.
That said, it is still much better than a wooden desk.
(glass is about 10 times better than wood, and aluminum is about 200 times better than glass in terms of the rate at which they can conduct heat)

I assume you are essentially going for the design that allows you to move the air under the bottom surface and don't care as much about additional heat removal from the surface.
But if you do care about the latter - then it would work even better if you had a metal plate that was smooth on the PB side and then textured (ideally fins) on the side that the fans would see.

Cool design though (no pun intended) - I love the way it makes it easy to configure - for instance you could have the fans blowing in at the laptop and after awhile see how that changes the heat dissipation - then flip them around the other way and see if it is any better/worse.

Trancepriest,
I was just wondering, why purchase a 15 inch PowerBook without the Superdrive, just to purchase an external DVD writer later. Isn't the SuperDrive a $200 upgrade option? I know this is asking without knowing the price of external DVD writers. Again, just wondering, since you plan to use it for mobile video production. I suppose that is an advantage of being able to connect the extenal burner to different computers.

Thx ! I used the glass for two reasons : 1) I happened to have one that was just the right size for the PB and 2) it is the best material, heat conduction-wise, that I had around me. So I didn't really choose it So it was just 'Readily accessible' as you put it.

It was not so much my intention to put the PB on a surface that further aids the cooling (since the case is already Alu) but rather to create the best possible airflow under the PB. Now my primary objective was to cool the fins that are at the back of the PB, as well as the underside. The way I positioned the fans makes that the airflow goes in through the back and comes out on top just above the keyboard (so if you put your finger close to the bottom of the screen above the function keys you feel cold air rushing by). This is what I think makes the biggest difference in temperature, and to cool these 'heatsinks' was my goal. The position of the fans also sees to it that there is fresh air flowing between the glass and the PB as well as under the glass.
I put the fans on a 12-9-6-3 V supply so I can adjust their speeds (and noise). I don't really like these 80mm fans, I will probably replace them by 60mm fans, different color too.

But changing the glass plate would make sense, and would probably cool the PB even better ... When I take a shot at it, I'll let you know what happens

Thx for the interest !

Its where the internal fans get their air from (try blowing into it when internal fans are on, you'll hear them accelerate). So constantly providing this access with cool air ... just cools better I guess.

If you look inside the plastic you'll see metal fins, specially in the bottom half.
