One of them I absolutely love. My love and admiration for this man borders on being embarrasing.

The other one I despise.

I won't say more until you all have voiced your opinions.

Don't wanna skew the results.

I've never seen CBS, so I'll go with the default choice: whoever is the hottest chick.

I remember John Roberts when he was "JD Roberts" working at CITY-TV in Toronto doing their "New Music" program in the late 70's...he was so nerdy trying to look cool with all the new wave bands they had on the show. He did do a really funny interview with Motorhead though......

'Nuff said.

I like Dan Rather actually. He's done great things for the Republicans, and I love the big dog story between him and Cronkite. Too bad the same didnt' happen to him. Yet.

Walter Cronkite was old school, wasn't quite as partisan.

Walter Cronkite, bar none. When Walter says something, it has authority, and he NEVER abused that. You can't say that about anyone who followed him.

John Dean (the Watergate dude) has a much different opinion of Cronkite. Dean was covering the GOP convention for Rolling Stone in '76 and was approached by CBS for an interview. It was agreed that the interview was to be strickly about his covering the convention and the articles for Rolling Stone. As soon as they were on the air godd 'ol Walter launched into questions about Watergate and Dean's as yet unpublished book - stuff that was agreed as being off limits. Ended up being a very short interview.

What is this "CBS" you speak of?
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Walter (and CBS News) were under the impression (as were many of us!) that Dean was doing the coverage more to get out into the public eye and promote his book than to actually report on the convention.

Please remember that John Dean is one of a handful of men who actually helped Nixon try to subvert the Constitution...something that I agree with Mr. Cronkite was a Very Bad Thing. Even if Nixon was as off the deep end as he seemed, wouldn't a smart person do his best to get the man professional help instead of helping him violate his oath of office?

If I were promoting a book, would I have one of *my* terms for an interview that the book *not* be a topic for discussion and then when it is brought up by the interviewer, basically end the interview, making myself look like a bit of an ass?

This has nothing to do with J Dean and his role in Watergate, what he did, didn't do.....Walter wanted a scoop and tried to get it underhandedly and failed.

I liked Cronkite as the anchor on CBS. He was well spoken and intelligent on the air and had that great aura about him that comes from so many years of experience. But he was not an angel either and would do whatever he thought he needed to to get a story, even breaking agreements.

Well, considering I do not watch the spin from any of the "big three" (ABC, NBC, CBS), I would have to go with Bill O'Reilly.

If you watch John Roberts for a week and Bob Schieffer for a week I believe you will be reminded of one of the heralded names mentioned here as news royalty.

For those who live outside the US, get a satellite dish and watch the CBS Evening News for a week. Then tell us which of the two reminds you of a former legendary news anchor.

Publicity, publicity, publicity. Getting one's name in the press, even by being "a bit of an ass" can be very useful. If the interview had gone off John's way, the news reports would have highlighted his demands for Watergate not to be mentioned. Since Walter did ask about Watergate, the news reports pointed out that John got huffy and left because of Watergate. Either way John won. I think Walter's idea was that maybe he'd get John to talk anyway, since the point was exposure, not his "reporting" on the convention.

John Roberts is in the same mold as Dan Rather and that chick on the CBS Morning Show they canned. They look at the camera with a nervous kind of desperate sincerity and when they try being spontaneous it seems insincere.

Bob Schieffer is intelligent, has a natural and easy going sense of humor, you know he's a good decent guy with sound reporting instincts well honed over time, and he is fair and seems only as unbiased as is needed to keep him from passing along HIS point of view when he's supposed to be objective.

And last but not least, Bob knows when he should stay with a strict objective reporting and when it's ok to let a bit of himself be known.

Bob Schieffer is THE BEST!!!!

Although NOT with CBS...

NBC's Campbell Brown is really pleasant to watch. Everything about her is professional, too!

Someone I'd like to debate (I can just tell she's a liberal!) and maybe marry.
