Well, before the other thread about a guy asking about what his first car should be gets locked, I thought I'd start a new thread.

What was your first car? And we want details here!

Mine was a '81 4-door Mercury Zephyr with a 202 cu. in straight 6 cylinder. It was a dog. It was some what reliable though. I owned it two years and the only think i did was replace the brake lines and a water pump. It may have looked like the geek mobile, but everyone loved it because it couple carry a whole party. We often had 9 people in it and took it out partying all the time. Lots of memories were created in that car.

The guy selling it was asking $1,200. I offered him $750 and he took it. My dad helped me buy it. I put in $400 and he added $350.

It was grey and had a genuine am/fm radio in it. No a/c. Vinyl bench seats. Crank windows. 3-speed automatic.

(not my car, but the only pic I could find on google images.)

1988 Honda Accord (this was back in 2001 when I got it). It had only 60,000 miles on it, and was in almost perfect condition, minus the rust spots in all the usual spots that a Honda Accord of the 80s have. Sadly I just sold it. Sigh...

'81 Volkswagon Dasher Diesel. 44mpg average and a whopping 52hp. Bought when I was 17 and drove it until I was 24. When I finally bought a new vehicle, the car had a negative Blue Book value (it was worth $350 but there was $400 deduction because it was a diesel, so I guess that made it worth -$50 ?? ). Rather than even bother with the expense of trying to sell a worthless vehicle, I had it crushed for scrap metal and got paid $55 for its 2200 pounds of throbbing German steel. No AC, AM radio only, manual EVERYTHING but it was economical and the rear seat folded to a make a flat deck nearly 6ft long .. slept there many times and it was a great place for me and my g/f to fool around in

1992 Toyota Corolla... My grandpa wanted me to have it so he drove it all the way from Massachusetts to colorado... I still have the car, and i drive it daily... on the weekend I drive my Jeep Wrangler (which I purchased and modified on my dime!) into the mountains and go 4 wheeling (when I can)... I just recently bought a motorcycle, and I will be taking the motorcycle safety class the end of this month...

That damn corolla is awesome, although the paint is fading pretty bad...

Mine was a great car!
'67 Saab - 3 cylinder, 2 stroke; 3 speed shift on the steering column.
Had to add a quart of oil to 8 gallons of gas when I filled it up.
Little old men would yell at me - that's not where the oil goes.
Damn thing floated; my buddies found this out and shoved it into
the Lake at home a couple times.

Bought it from my HS Band Director in '75 to drive to College (WVU);
and drove the dickens out of that thing.
My dad and I did alot of body work, painted, and reupholstered it.
(I was the first kid to drive a non American car in the family.)

I remember once driving it thru about 24" of snow to get home
one year from school - good old Finzel, Grant County, Md.
It had a Frigiking AC that was mounted under the dash that would
freeze you to death. 3 biggest spark plugs I've ever seen.
Back seat came completely out for more room.
Great memories of times with that car.
I'll have to find pics; didn't even try to google it.

'Was a 1987 Nissan Micra (the one in the pic isn't my car, but it looked just like it). Paid for it myself too. I think it was around $1200, not sure anymore.

Lasted about 2 years and then it gave out on me in the middle of a drive-through on a saturday night. *g* I think I put it up for sale in the paper for $200, the first call came in at 5 in the morning. Sold it that day.

Some great memories though...it's really a completely different world when you don't have to rely on PT to get around anymore.

Have you been touched by his noodly appendage?

1980 (ish) Daihatsu FourTrak. I can't find a single picture of one but it was the square, utilitarian one which looked like a Jeep CJ with a roof.

2.8 diesel. 4WD. 4 spd manual (+ transfer case). Gearing so low even in 4-Hi that it'd actually do wheelies but it'd top out at 70 mph uphill/downhill/flat. 10 mpg.
Inwards-facing benches seats in the back for four, but you could fit six in if you had a mind to (yes, that's eight people in something the same size as a modern Wrangler). It'd take a Marshall stack and a couple of guitars when needed.
It'd carry on running for five minutes after I'd turned it off - even after I'd taken the key out, locked up and walked away. When it rained the roof used to leak water onto the front passenger. Female passengers used to "jiggle" a lot (summer + rain + bumpy road was very very good). Had a hand-throttle which let me wind it up to 40 mph with my feet up.
Handled like a dream - that's where I learnt how to do oversteer, much to the concern of most passengers. The most fun car ever. And the chicks loved it.

I killed it on some black ice one night. Loss of road leading to a nice barrel roll. Even that was fun.
If it doesn't scare hippies, it's not worth listening to

A silver 1977 Mercedes 300D; 5 cyl., 88hp, automatic tranny, top speed 140km/h (87 mph), 0-60 in just under 18hrs. Bought it for 1400 Marks ($700) - never failed me and absolutely indestructible, a real tank. Or was the blue Renault 5 my first car? Not all that sure at the moment ... and way too lazy to look up the paperwork now.

Mine was a 1979 Austin Mini 850.

A great and fun can to drive - was sort of glued to road... It had a top speed of 116 km/h (did 0-60 mph in a whopping 24.90 seconds!), 34 hbp.

The only thing which bugged me about the car, was when driving in the winter time - you could not turn on the heating, if you did, the heating apperatus would leak all the hot water onto the floor, and you would end up getting a nice hot footbath

Of course it was rusty, but nothing some sheet metal and fibreglass couldn't fix.

A 1989 Toyota Starlet XL, 1.3 litres, 75 hp, 750 kg, max speed 170 km/h. Bought it used (1 year) in 1990 and that car never let me down. Since the day i bought it i only had to replace expendable parts like filters, tires and so on.

There´s something special about the engine. It´s a Stromberg-type like carburetor loaded engine with controlled catalytic converter. No electronics, only vacuum controlled switches manage the amount of fuel being released. These pics were taken when i exchanged the cold start compensation unit this years may.

Luckily i found a Toyota specialist here in my new town (i moved in January). He´s some kinda "carb whisperer" Folks with old Toyotas come from all over Germany just to let him fix their engines, carb´s and so on....

VW beetle. The last model with the flat front windscreen. British racing green, sunroof, 34hp. I worked all through my summer holidays in a factory to afford that car. I loved it.

My first car was in 1980, and was a 1958 VW Bug. Inside all the grill work, dash, glove compartment was dipped in chrome, seats were two tone suede like, and the rear seat was taken out. In its place was astro turf. I'd ride for hours, pull over and sleep in the back. Lot of problems, but lots of memories. Remember taking a girl out on a first date. the car wouldn't start, but her mom offered to push the car to get it running. It worked! Faulty regulator among other things wrong. Great thing about California, cars last forever, while here on the cape it would have been a heap of rust years ago.

1962 Mercury Comet-in black!

It was about ten years old then, and I loved it-except for how it handled high crosswinds on icy roads...

Sweet! ride.

Looks a little like my father's old buick. The one where his neighbor who worked for chrysler wedged an all aluminum big block inside of it after he threw a rod... (Going down the highway)...

Funny story he told me. Some kids used to wheel it down the driveway and then push start it down the street and go for a joy ride now and then. He always got a call from the local grocer saying his car was in the lot...again.

Mine was actually a year earlier and a much lighter brown. But it was an amazingly dependable car. If the air conditioner worked, I'd still be driving it.

1981 Mercury Lynx hatchback, two-tone brown. Got it essentially for free when my neighbours moved to Hong Kong. My Dad and I retrieved it from the auto shop where they had taken it in, went to the local junkyard for a new cylinder head (the early Escorts were ALWAYS getting cracks in them) and swapped the new one in. It ran well enough for high school, I think lasting about 4 years in total.

OK I said what it was in the otherthread but here's the details.

2003 Skoda Fabia Classic 1.4 8v, bought about 6 weeks ago.

68bhp, supposedly about 40mpg (I say supposedly because I havent counted the miles I've gone on a full tank yet). It had 4500 miles on the clock when I bought it (its a 2 year old car!). Its basic, wind up windows, cassette stereo (but I've hooked up my iPod and phone with a bluetooth headset plugged into one of those cassette tape adapters) etc. Its red and looks pretty much like this one:

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

1976 Saab 99 GL, just like the one in the picture above, only with oxidized paint and a dent. It was about 10 years old when I got it, but it was a fun first car for 500 quid. I loved the Saab quirkiness -- the bizarre seatbelt latches, aircraft-like gauges and windshield, and ignition on the center console. I didn't like the lack of power steering. It was a so-and-so to park.

Bad. Ass. After I got some 15X8 Cragers in back (instead of 14X10), I dropped the back end as low as I could (adjustable air shocks) and adjusted the front torsion bars to drop the front. Also put a black bumble bee stripe on it. It was fun, and I do miss it. I'll get another one eventually.

Always were. Chargers werent' exactly rare cars. The ones that are worth a ton are the ones with special really rare options, mainly when equipped with a hemi. Mine only had a 383 and hurst 4psd, one of 235 equipped with that drivetrain that year, so it was kinda rare, but not valuable.

Mine was a 1973 Plymouth Scamp, which my father gave to me in 1986. I drove that car to death in high school. It finally died a year later. It had a Dodge 225 CID slant six engine, which a guy purchased from me for $2500. Mine was beige but still looked like this:
