Everyone likes getting something for nothing, especially when there's no or relatively few catches. Freebie Friday is the post where the MacNN staff find stuff you can make use of this weekend, or potentially over the course of the holiday, without spending a single cent. This time, prepare for Christmas boredom by signing up for various free online courses, which could help you start the new year with new skills and maybe even a new career.

If you fancy starting out in web development, you may have come across the term "Bootstrap" a few times, with regards to design. The Joy of Bootstrap course, valued at $29, will guide you on how to use this powerful framework, with over 24 courses and 1.5 hours of content available to use. Topics include learning how Bootstrap and jQuery work together, understanding Bootstrap's grid system, and the use of glyphicons and typography.

To go along with the Bootstrap course, why not learn the essential core web programming skills at the same time? The Mammoth Interactive Five-Hour Developer Course includes five one-hour courses covering HTML, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and JQuery. They may be short courses, but they will give you a foundation to build your development skills from, and to help you choose where to go next in a potential new career.

One major tool developers use is Git, and sometimes you have to go through a course to learn how to use it more efficiently. The Git Training Bundle includes two courses, starting with one for getting started with the online repository hosting service GitHub, and another covering the command line essentials of Git and Git Bash.

Maybe you want to get into app development, instead of dealing with the web. The Make School Online Academy access will show you how to take an app from an idea to something running on your phone, by teaching you Swift and other languages to clone classic apps before creating your own.

Lastly, if you don't usually cook or want to improve your existing cookery skills, you have just enough time to squeeze in some extra training to mentally prepare you for preparing Christmas dinner. Productivity expert Tim Ferriss' audiobook the Four Hour Chef is free on MacNN Deals, and will teach you to understand the basic building blocks of cooking, how to learn more efficiently, and despite being less useful for cooking at home, how to hunt and forage for your own edible items in an emergency.
