My digicable box has your usual left and right audio outs. My iMac has better speakers than TV. Get my drift. What device do I need to buy to avoid using the microphone jack? Which can I use for at least three years (assuming I might need more connectivity)? FireWire, definitely. I have no clue. Help a friend?

<bump> any ideas? I don't know where to look. I've checked out fwdepot.com but didn't find anything for a consumer. I don't need a music studio, just some kind of convertor.

you'll need to get some sort of audio to usb adapter, like the griffin iMic( <a href="http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/index.html</a> ). the only firewire solutions i know of are MOTU's 828, but that will run you about $700.

griffin also used to have a product called powerwave, but looking at their new site, i think they discontinued it. here's a link to the old product page: <a href="http://www.griffintechnology.com/audio/pwrwave.html" target="_blank">http://www.griffintechnology.com/audio/pwrwave.html</a>

a little pricey for what you want to do...your best bet is the iMic and a stereo RCA-1/8" stereo male cable.

one question: are your tv speakers really that bad? and i assume your tv and iMac are close to each other, right? because watching a tv in front of you, while the sound comes from your iMac across the room would be kinda annoying!

Thanks for the link. The PowerWave looks like a better choice since I get both RCA and 1/8" connections. Looks like USB is the way to go.

The tv is a 10-year old, 13" Sony Trinitron. My Mac is on the same wall. It's speakers are infinitely superior to the single 4" in the set. Only recently did I plug two and two together and imagine watching a movie and hearing it in stereo.
