An intern set up file sharing from my G5 to my laptop.

In the end, I would open the laptop do a command N. ON left says, PLACES. Then folder called LISTS appears below that. LISTS, originate from an external Hard drive called Main Disc, tied to the G5. And that has what I need to work on.

But now, all sudden when I click on List, my external hardrive Main Disc mounts on the laptop. This did now happen before. Before, I only saw lists, without the entire hard drive mounting and exposing other sensitive files. What do? thanks.

G5 on Tiger, Macbook on Leopard.

Your post is confusing. Not sure what your PLACES and LISTS is all about.

You should get the intern who set this thing up to fix it.

When connect to the other computer, make sure you select their username and not the computer name. Selecting the computer will mount the root volume, selecting the username will mount the user's home directory. An administrative login and password on that computer will allow you to mount either.

To make the convoluted simple.
I want just a single folder to be accessible on my laptop. This folder orginates from an external HD plugged into my G5.
Now for last year this was working perfectly. Now the actual external HD pops up on the laptops desktop.
And I cannot remember how any of this works.

Honestly, get the intern to help you.

To "spoon feed" someone with every little step via a forum is tedious at best.

System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing > Shared Folders > + > add "LISTS" to the shared folders listed.

Andy, this is from the G5? or laptop?
On G5 which is tiger, don't see the add feature.
I do see it in on laptop which is leopard.
On laptop, even though main disc is visible on desktop it will not come up in file sharing.
However, strangley enough, in Places on left, I do see the LIST on laptop (leopard) . (perhpas, the intern put it here. So I try to add LIST, from that, however, it does not stick.
so I'm still where I was before, I have list OK, but the full Main disc in on desktop of laptop, which I don't want.
For last 5 months I had just list, withough Main disc showing on laptop desktop.
Is this clear?

Jeff - I don't have Tiger on any of my Macs anymore, so I can't see exactly what the sharing settings would be.

Ok, so let me get this straight: the access to LISTS still works, right ?

You are only concerned because the whole drive gets mounted ?

AFAIR, accessing a remote folder that was placed in "Places" would have ALWAYS resulted in the other drive being mounted. Maybe you just didn't see the drive show up on the desktop, because it was turned off in the Finder preferences (Finder - Preferences - General - Show [...] Connected Servers)

The ONLY way to restrict access to the LISTS folder and not allow access to anything else is to make sure nothing else is shared other than the folder LISTS.
This is done in Leopard / SL in Preferences - Sharing.

I think the shared portion is on tiger... But the whole explanation of the problem is so convoluted that I don't really know what the actual problem is..

Maybe you could start from the top with some screenshots, Jeff?

Maybe that is your problem. Turtle's statement is correct -- access to files and drives is governed on the host machine. In this case your G5 is the host, if I read your original post correctly. Reexamine the file sharing settings and accesses on the G5.

Ah, ok.

So here you go, Jeff.

Set Up File Sharing in OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

Next you need SharePoints, to share only the specific folder LISTS:

HornWare: SharePoints

And maybe, if this doesn't help get this:

Take Control of Sharing Files in Tiger

Nice info Turtle.
Here is where I'm at.
On laptop I sent, Go, Network, and found G5, then it "saw" my Home folder called "jeff". A hardrive called Jeff mounted on the laptop but was empty. then message comes up and says, error --network not conncted.
But in fact the model/ router is working fine. this is where I am at now.

Forget about the network not connected, that's solved.
Main thing now is how to allow the laptop to see certain folders.
I put group -- network from dropdown, did not work, just guessing.
Anyone know how to permit this stuff to happen?

Boy, nobody, here seems to know the most basic file sharing stuff, amazing. (not that I'm any better)...

Anyway, appreciate the help, but still lost. It just seems I have to permit the laptop to see the files, but what permissions do you change, groups? what?

It's not that we don't know it. It's that you're not that tech savvy. Your descriptions are confusing and you don't usually understand what we tell you. Or you don't do what we say like in some of your other threads.

Thanks Art, completly meaningless worthless reply.
If you can't help, just help someone else.

I have a simple question:
File sharing is on and working.
How to get certain folders to "show" on the laptop which is in the other room from the primary computer the G5?
If you don't know, maybe someone else will

I do know. Others here know. You've been told already how to do this.

Since you're on Tiger, you need to use SharePoints as mentioned above by turtle777. Download that and read the instructions. The instructions will walk you through it step-by-step with pictures.

What is shared points and why do I need a 3rd party program to do such a basic thing?

Tiger does not provide a built-in way to share particular folders. It only shares home folders, public folders and whole drives. SharePoints adds this capability.

Leopard has this built-in and SharePoints is not required any longer.

Art/ others.
Share points was working perfect for a couple weeks.
The all sudden a lot of files from the folder I chose are coming up "read only" on the laptop.
YEt the files are indeed read/write.
Couldn't figure it out, so I just deleted the share and recreated the share.
But now the folder wont appear at all on the laptop.
I registered on horware.com forums, but there is a lock on the forums and I can't post.
I've emailed the owner twice and he wont answer emails.

Anyone around?
Jo Sharepoints is great for a week or two, then doesn't work.
They have a forum, you can register to but not post.
They have a big Lock symbol on forums, can't post.

It's a discontinued product for a OS that's 4.5 years old.

How about you do yourself the favor and upgrade to SL ?

Turtle,
still, so the forums are not working anymore?
Actually, after upgrading and upgrading... I've decided to stay put happy and stable with 10.4.1 for long time..... I burnt out on upgrading for so little benefits and huge headaches. Eventualy, of course I upgrade and get new computer... maybe 1-5 more years.
Still, have you used Sharepoints. It was so effortless, but then files started saying read only, and no, just doesn't seem to work.
