I was wondering if apple has any kind of policy where if you buy a product and a new one comes out rather recently, do you get an upgrade or some sort of discount towards the new one? I was thinking this because I am thinking of getting a new MBP and I heard rumors of a new version coming out in january...

If it's within 14 days you can return it and pay the restocking fee.

New version is more likely to be February than January, but certain (as well as can be) for the first quarter. It's likely to be a pretty minor update (100-200Mhz, 2MB cache, marginal HDD, maybe 8800M underclocked graphics).
