You clearly don't have an app you'd like to see get made. Good job staying away from a contest that is not for you.

I agree that the contest is good for people with a great idea, but never plan on developing it. Kindof the "It would be nice if...." type of ideas. Not for a commercial app or something that you were hoping to get rich from. I just started with the wrong idea with what the contest was about.

And I do have apps I'd like to see made. I just hope to profit from them when they do get made.

Hey, I'm entering simply because I want the app idea to be made! Personally, if they make it at all it'll save me having to do it myself. Any money would be a bonus

Heh, call that a good learning experience. We even have one of the biggest critics of the MT contest on board to develop one of the ideas (Jason Harris, ShapeShifter, mrsmeger on these forums).

I see that most of your questions regarding ownership of ideas and such were answered by other members on these forums. I think our terms strike a fair balance between covering our asses and making things reasonable for contestants.

Just hit 1800 ideas submitted.

"The first three finalists include “Herald,” an newsreading application that presents sections similar to a virtual newspaper, with publishing characteristics not unlike iWeb; Stick-It, a sticky note application that lets notes be attached in apps, menus or windows; and Desktop Wars, a real-time strategy game that uses the Mac OS X desktop as a battlefield, with support for mouse, voice and motion sensor."

Dreamy aren't they.

I've always wanted to have a war on my current desktop but I find the current Finder does that job nicely already.

I have very little interest in the developments (ha) in this contest; I didn't submit an idea, etc. etc. etc.

However, if it boiled down to them selling a Windows version that did much better, and if they withheld the money from the winner, all I'm saying is he could stand up in court.

I'd hope you're right. My guess is they'd define Macintosh compatible, and it'd become a war between whehter the OS or the Hardware was implied.

Yes lets hope. Lets also hope those Apps are not sticky notes in each app.

I'm sure a couple of them will be cool idea's but making them public like that opens the door to someone else stealing the idea that didn't win.

I'll take a mechanical pencil instead please, I like breaking the lead multiple times when writing all over the keyboard.

To be quite honest, I don't see the problem there (or rather, I don't see why the problem is bigger here than anywhere else). If your app is successful, you'll get imitators as well. There's always the risk that somebody will have the same idea as you, either on their own or by hearing yours. The fact is, ideas are cheap. I get hundreds of them for free every day straight from my brain. It's the work and finesse required to make a quality app that will decide whether a program sinks or swims.

My Dreamy App: Xen for OS X (although I don't know if I'd ever use it).

I'd also like a system-wide software update mechanism that will update all my freeware/open source, but I think my best chance of getting this is Macports once they have built in support for installing binaries.

Yes!

So many people miss that. You get people on programmer forums saying "I can't program but I have this cool idea; how about you make it and we split the profit 50:50?"

Some developer once pointed out that an idea was worth about a beer. You buy them a drink, and then get on with the hard work of making the app. Perhaps a few drinks if it's well fleshed out.

I have hundreds of app ideas myself. In fact, on my to-do list was the same idea as Hi-jack (a forum browsing app). Do I mind that someone else submitted it and may get the prize? No! I'm just glad that the app may get made, and to a better standard than I could do.

It's a shame. Her idea is way less suck than a lot of those. (I mean, not that I think it's great, but those are a lot worse.)

I do love how she starts her bio with "I'm not much of a girly girl" and then her app is…the computer equivalent of a Barbie Dream Closet or something.

I liked a few--blossom for the fun of it, minerva, and cookbook if it's done well and not too overcomplicated. Mostly for generating grocery lists from recipes, by week.

I'm surprised how bla they all are. Even if every app was already developed and freeware the only ones I would download is Minerva, and iGotPets. So far that silly game seems to be winning.

On a side note Marshall Kucharczyk is a hottie

Non of them really seem like a "killer app" though and if it wasn't for this publicity they would probably never even get noticed.
