So now that it's out, can anyone confirm that it does support TRIM for all SSDs, or is it just for Apple-branded SSDs? This is the one single killer feature for me that will determine whether I buy it or not.
Thanks!

Nergol, why would that affect our decision. Snow Leopard doesn't support TRIM, so if Lion doesn't you're no worse off.

benefit of strep throat...being at home today to DL this.
downloading now...my first purchase thru the App Store!
looking forward to exploring Lion's new features, then...getting back to work
(and hopefully not discovering apps that no longer work... )

I'm not bothering yet for two reasons. Firstly it took me over an hour to download a 70MB file earlier so it will take all night.
Second, I'm pretty sure Apple will give me a free redemption code but they'll wait a few days knowing that all the impatient consultants will go ahead and buy it anyway to save waiting. Grrr.
|
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I'm reading John Siracusa's review of Lion right now. I probably won't upgrade for a few days. Maybe get in a few more hours of Oni in before I lose it forever. Sob. (Though I forgot how annoying the default control setting was, and how hard it is to change. Grrrr.)

There's an Intel port of Oni.

2 hours total from download start to desktop. am playing around now; def feels "Snappier" (but i'm supposed to think that right?).
mixed feelings about some things: why does address book look like a paper book? it's 2011...
and how do i customize launchpad to show only the apps i want? (do-able?)
and now, back to exploring...
EDIT: scrolling is killing me LOL on my macbook; it's the reverse of what it was before...gotta get used to it...
EDIT2: ical is UGLY, with that horrible bar at the top, and the ridiculous torn paper below it...

I just went to the Oni Bungie forum and yes, there a port in progress, but it appears buggy and incomplete. But work is ongoing, so that makes me happy.

it DOES NOT show up in the home folder.....

How do you mean? I'm guessing this has to do with falling in-line with iOS?

It's invisible now. Use the Finder's Go to Folder... command and enter ~/Library. It will open up the folder for you. You can also make it visible with a 3rd party tool or SetFile if you have Xcode.

You'll get used to it quickly and the old way will drive you nuts when you go to a non-Lion computer.

Downloading, 2.7GB down, about an hour to go.
How easy is the Mission Control, Launchpad etc stuff if you don't have a multitouch trackpad or mouse?

Here's the feature I'm most excited about :
New account pictures
Lion includes several new account pictures. Click the photo in the Users and Groups preference pane to choose one.
Download took about 30 minutes start to finish. Installing now...

there are NO options by default (unless some sort-of Option-Click thing??)
seems to simply update/overwrite snow lep sys files...
everything else was there on reboot (my stuff, apps, etc)...

Apple has either given up on resolution independence, or has implemented a simpler version of it, depending on how you want to look at it.
Basically, you can cut your resolution from, say, 1280 x 800 to 640 x 400, effectively quadrupling your fonts, but the system continues to draw them as if the screen were still 1280 x 800. Siracusa explains it at Ars Technica here: Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: Resolution Independence.
I think it's a pretty good compromise, and your half-blind parents will love you again.

This is taken from here
Show User ~/Library in OS X Lion
Launch Terminal from Spotlight or Launchpad -> Utilities, and enter the following command to show or hide the directory:
chflags nohidden ~/Library/
The users Library folder will immediately become visible again. Reverting this back to the standard Lion setting is simple too:
Hide User ~/Library in OS X Lion (default setting)
This returns to the default setting of hiding the user Library directory:
chflags hidden ~/Library
Changes take effect immediately again, and Library becomes invisible to the user.

Anybody having trouble downloading the iTunes 10.4 and Remote Desktop Client 3.5.1 via Software Update? I've tried several times and it goes through the motions, but then tells me that the installs have failed because of an 'unknown error."
Edit: Downloaded iTunes 10.4 directly from Apple.com and it fails during the last stage of the installation process.... wtf?

Installation took about an hour and 20 minutes. Immediately after startup, everything is much slower, but I'm assuming Spotlight re-indexing everything is fairly taxing.
This new scrolling has to go. I split time between different machines and no way am I going to switch.

You can switch back to the old scrolling direction in system preferences.

If it is, there should be a little, pulsing dot in the middle of the Spotlight magnifying glass.

System Preferences/Mouse
Uncheck "Move content in the direction of finger movement when scrolling or navigating".

I don't know about that. Lion implements a completely new autolayout system to replace the old springs-and-struts model, and one distinct advantage of the new system is that it is much better suited to resolution independence. So once Cocoa Autolayout has picked up a decent level of adoption, maybe we'll see RI yet.

Okay, I thought Lion was going to save application states at closing, but it's the applications that do that. Therefore, old applications = no such luck.
I'm used to Chrome and don't want to switch back to Safari, so for the time being, Lion is adding zilch to my web browsing experience.
Oh, and please tell me there's a way to label my desktops!

I know that Spotlight is re-indexing. I said I'm assuming that's why everything is slower.
Experiencing some hiccups - internet access died on me, and Safari and Mail hung when trying to reboot. Force quitting those and restarting fixed it for now. But now it seems that Safari has forgotten a bunch of my login cookies (facebook, several forums, etc., but not MacNN strangely).

To build on my previous post, I've seen the same thing twice now. I start Software Update, tell it to install, and immediately after it starts downloading it hangs. Everything else is fine until I try and stop or force quit SU, then I lose internet access system-wide and have to reboot.

After downloading it didn't take that long to install. I noticed spotlight indexing like Laminar said, and website cookies got flushed too.
Seems great so far though. 8 GB RAM, SSD, so obviously that's geared for performance.
I tried the new scrolling but disabled it. I also put dashboard back to normal: as an overlay when its keyboard key is pressed, instead of Lion's default in mission control.
A small feature, but I really like the three finger-hold to move a window.

It took quite some time to install, but it runs smoothly. I have the sneaking suspicion the install of Xcode hands yet again, but other than that, I haven't encountered any problems. The new iTunes seems to use up a lot less resources while playing (1~3 % when playing musing and ~11 % instead of 20 % when playing videos).
I have to wrap my head around Mission Control, most operations are quite easy, but `peaking' doesn't come naturally to me yet. I've permanently activated the scroll bars since TextMate doesn't work with the hidden scroll bars. Perhaps TextMate 2.0 will solve this issue
I'm trying to get used to the `reversed/natural' scrolling. I'll give it a week. Yesterday, it drove me batty, but today I already have less trouble.
