How do I silence the Boot-up "Chime"?

Because of my living situation, I need to set up my Mac in "stealth" mode. How do I silence the "chime" that sounds when the system is booted up?
I checked MUTE in the system preferences but it had no effect.

On the iMac, you have to unplug external speakers, mute the sound as normal with the keyboard, then reinsert the external speakers.

I have no external speakers. Just the built-ins. This is one of the intel iMacs.

When I want my PB to start up with no sound, I mute it before I turn it off. The volume it's at when it's turned off is the volume the chime chimes at, at least on PBs.

Yeh Def Jef is correct, and this applies for the iMacs too. Its just easier if you have ext speakers, as the in built speakers can be set at a diff volume to that of the ext speakers, so when you unplug the ext's the int's aren't blaring loud, so I just have the int's set @ 0 all the time, so no boot chime for me, and no need to remember to mute the volume before a shutdown

There are some utilities for this. Go to MacUpdate and search on "Chime".

Or a cheap alternative is to plug a pair of cheap headphones (which you'll probably need if you want to listen to music, unless it's too "risky"  )

well my macbook still chimes through the internal speakers when i have speakers plugged in, so i'm guessing that's not a solution. unless there's something wrong with my computer!
