So many logos these days are designed for screen only. That atrocity will print terrible, even on decent paper. When I first started in the business I would have been handed my ass on a plate by my Creative Director had I handed in anything similar.

And here and now is when icons become sort of Vista gadgets… not that all OS X widgets are perfect, but you know, it was MS who really brought gadgets to everyday computers !!

Horrid. Also, I'm kind of a fan of the current icons. No confusion, real business-like when they're sitting in the dock. Also with Adam's icons and others out there, there's plenty of ways to spruce them up if you see fit.

This new thing is AWFUL, and seriously how does this lame thing even make it as far as OUR eyes?

No. Not even close. Even before OS X came out with widgets there was 3rd party applications out for OS X that did it similarly.

MS copied the look and feel of these "applications" and called them "gadgets"

It's their typical M.O.

Take ideas or concepts that are already in use. Make their spin version of it. (Usually with a similar name as a spinoff) and act as if you invented it.

I remember when OS X first showed off "Aqua". MS a month or so later replied to it with a GUI called "Luna" with Aqua like behavior (But in a fake dodgy way) that we now know as XPs Fisher Price GUI. And then of course they acted as if they invented that "smooth plastic shiny" look. XP was actually supposed to have a lot of features Vista has (some didn't even make it to Vista) But MS had to have an OS to reply to OS X. And that was what XP was. Vista was actually a lot later than MS claims. Just because you rename a product, doesn't mean that the time you spent on it suddenly starts there.

They are just now catching up with Quartz with Vista. And of course, acting as if they invented it. Even though Quartz has been out since before 2000.

They did it with text to speech too. That one really had me laughing.

I'm guessing the naming followed through from previous versions of each bit of software and the viewpoints of many individuals, but they should've been uniform.

This new logo seems to be another "we could, err, umm, ok, let's do that" kind of deal.

The concept? For them to be simple, square blocks with letters and unique colours for each app. Easy to remember, logical, and not (in themselves) distracting (though combining them with many of the more ‘rounded’ and ‘Applesque’ icons in a dock would make them distracting).

Edit: Never mind—completely misread your last sentence. I don’t see how this new thing fits in with anything, either. Except perhaps a disease-ridden rhesus monkey’s representation (drawn with its feet) of the MS Office:mac 2004 icon set...

I like the "Elements" concept as well. It took me a while to get used to it, after the initial shock of Photoshop beta. I mean I thought it was truly a "beta" icon back then. But together with the rest of the suite it makes sense.

I had a square replacement icon set already installed (AlBook) so it didn't stick out that much except for the colours.

And of course I like Adam's replacement icons as well.

That new blue thing though... ewwww.
