So I just found out last week that I know this guy's grandson...in fact he's in my small group at church. He's a smart kid but he's a bit distracting and craves attention. It sounds like he's been through a lot of problems in his life, and I'm sure this is no help. He's currently living with relatives here in Iowa.

$5/20 rounds .223 VS $2/20 rounds.
Huge savings on target cartridges.
And I reload my cowboy revolver cartridged.
And I load my own competition cartridges. They're much more accurate.

I read about this guy, and it looks like the Great State of California managed to miss someone who desperately needed attention from a mental health professional. Other sources provided more information, and the reported "million" rounds is probably a vast exageration; the number seems to have come from some TV reporter seeing more than a few boxes of ammunition. Further, ammunition does not "explode" in a fire; it pops, rather harmlessly, though quite loudly. Not good for firefighters to be close to but not really dangerous.

The "machine used to load gunpowder into empty casings" could be either a powder measure or a reloading press-it's hard to tell from the extremely pejorative way the story was worded. Not illegal at all; it's a productive hobby that tends to provide focus and gives us "attention to detail" junkies something to do.

The real issue is that 75 pounds of "gunpowder." Was it really gunpowder (also known as "black powder") or was it smokeless powder for reloading? Black powder can be dangerous if contained and exposed to fire, but smokeless burns - very fast and very hot, but it just burns.

Yes of course, but there's bulk and then there's bulk. How long does it take you to go through 30000 rounds?

Easily go through 1,000 rounds (total) per day at the range for 2-3 people, and 3-4 different weapons. Not anymore, but we used to hit the range 2x per month. That's the math.

I can easily burn through 500 rounds of .45 long colt at a cowboy action shoot.

Reloading keeps the cost of the bullets down from .20¢ to .08¢ a cartridge.

I keep 20# or more of smokeless gunpowder on hand at any given time, and there are many different varieties of smokeless powders for a given application. There's ball powder, flake powder and stick type powder all made with nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine.

I also will have a couple thousand lead bullets on hand for the reloader.

I think some of those prices are a bit out of date. Cost for bullets and reloading components are a bit higher right now.

I paid $24/50 45LC when I was out. But I needed new brass to reload anyway.
If prices of .223 ball ammo continues to rise, I may start reloading that also.
My wife can burn through 200 rounds of .45 in no time also, I need to start reloading for that one too.

A box of 500 lead cast pre-lubed .45/452dia bullets cast $13.00.

1000 primers are $17.00

A pound of smokless powder is $19.00 and will make 1000 bullets.

So effectively I can make 1000 bullets for less than buying 150 pre-loaded if I have my brass.

If I have to buy brass for some reason, the casings are $20 a hundred.

...now if I could just find a source for 5.7mm casings I'd be happy. The tooling is available but its a REAL pain to try and pick up those casings on the range. At 19 to $25 per 50 it'd be a decent savings I think.
