I scanned the Lounge quickly and didn't see a thread. Apparently I missed it.
Edit: I still don't see another thread.

Dang, really? 6 hours? Ah well. I just noticed, anyway. I'd been checking all day, too. I swear I checked earlier than 6 hours ago!
But seriously, I'm Jonesin' for an iBook, now. They have great specs. As much as I want to wait for an Intel iBook, this is a sweet deal for only $999 (and even better with employee discount). Yummy.
How does the Radeon 9550 perform anyway? Too bad they're skimping on the VRAM, but I doubt anyone's looking—especially not me—to game on an iBook.

Of course. Finding neither, I felt compelled to start an 'NN thread.

You'' find it next to impossible to do any print or 3d work comfortably on a 1024 screen. I have an iBook and I can't use it for anything other than surfing.

9550 = great card, supports Core Image
32 MB VRAM = even UT '99 and Quake 3 are going to be held back on this machine

Yeah, about the only negative I see to this is the limited video ram.

The Lounge has always been everything goes. I would think this forum gets a lot more traffic than the iBook one, too. People are always shootin' the **** about Apple stuff here anyway. If it's that big a deal that yet another thread about a new Apple product was started in— gasp—the Lounge, then the mods can always move or lock it.
9550 supports CoreImage? Sweet. And I wouldn't do anything too heavy on the iBook. Mostly browsing, e-mail, light Photoshop work, and movie-watching. I mostly would like it for the mobility.
And dang, the Mac minis were updated, too! Go, Apple!

Not anything that I wasn't expecting... though the new scrolling options are great, and the motion sensor for the HD is great too! As well, it's a fine lappy to hook up to an external CRT.

No. You must wait for the Pentium M iBook. It won't be long.

Widescreen would've indeed been very cool. I'm contemplating applying for an Apple Credit account tomorrow to see if I can get enough money towards the iBook to pick one up tomorrow at work. Decisions, decisions....

Overall I would say that all of Apple's laptops are a bit weak right now. Like SWF mentioned above, the 12" PB is rather bad value for the money, when compared with the new iBook offering.
Apple's laptops are way too dated for me to consider them seriously. They get WAY too hot around the power plug, the screens are quite dim compared with PC notebooks, and the G4 is well past its prime.
Obviously I've got a PB so I'm familiar with all of these problems. For web-surfing and word processing it is fine, but whenever you start using iTunes or iPhoto, the fan turns on full blast, the battery drains itself out, and it becomes unpleasant to use. When Apple starts making Intel-based notebooks, I have no doubt that they will be the best on the market. But right now, I'll pass.

If the screen on my 15" Al PB were any brighter, it might blind me.

Are you sure about that? I've got the same type of PB as you, and I've seen much brighter screens on PC notebooks, especially the Sony Vaio.

Let me rephrase that. I am more than happy with the brightness of my PB. I haven't seen many PC notebooks.

I recently shopped around for notebooks. I'd much prefer the display on my PB to anything that sony offers. (Especially if I work anywhere that there is an overhead light). <-- glare factor.

I had the same question and got a few responses in this thread. If anyone would like to add to it, go right ahead.
On a side note, I can't wait to see what video card Apple puts in the next 12" PB's. It would be nice of them to bump them up to 128MB in the next round. It's unlikely, I know, but wouldn't it be nice...

I think Kerrigan is correct actually. The previous iBook was a bit weak on the contrast and and brightness IMO. Same goes for the current PowerBook 12".
OTOH, the 15" and 17" are quite bright and contrasty IMO, and initial reports are that the 12" iBook now sports a stronger backlight than the previous model. Not sure if that's true cuz I don't have mine yet, but here's hoping...
As for the shininess in some PC laptop screens, it does seem to make the colours "pop", but I too hate them. Glare up the yinyang. I will never buy one of those machines if I can help it.
In the meantime, it seems my iBook sat around all day at the FedEx depot in China for some reason.

Maybe they ship out between 10 and 11pm, and yours just barely missed the shipment?
I also dislike the glare. Its nice for a second, and good for sellability, but I would quickly tire of the glare.

I had a student in my class complain that his PC was "outdated". (It was 6 months old). Amazing.
