6 months AND 50 posts before you can start a new topic.

That's pathetic.

Sounds like a good rule to me, it would cut down on trolling.

50 posts is ok, but that 6 months is over the top. But a forum like this can't implement a 50 posts rule. Some people sign up to ask a question about their Mac. That's how I started off in here anyway.

at least you wouldn't become "addicted" on that forum and spend way too much time on it, like i do here

Some rules definitely make sense (especially the restriction of starting threads). I´d say that our mods and admins should deliberate on that.

Not anymore. The new hotness (tm) among spammers is to multi-post spam messages in existing threads. Fortunately we haven't been hit with this yet, because deleting ten posts is much more painful than deleting two or three threads.

Originally, it was 1 year AND 100 posts. Could you imagine not being able to post a new topic for A YEAR?

Six months is WAY over the top.

Oh, on a sports site I visit, the new posted terms of service/agreement just changed. You can no longer use ***** or (*&%$ as fillers in your post to mean swear words, etc. It is grounds for account banning!

True, but don't you think 6 months is a bit excessive? In 6 hours I can put up a competing forum. All I wanted to do was post about some Yankees stuff my mom found in the house and now I have to wait 6 months to do so. Imagine if every Mac user had to wait 6 months to post here about their Mac. Most people would replace them by that time!

It's not pathetic. It's what's missing here at MacNN.
Make it 25 posts and 3 months and will still work.

Darn Spam and re-registering after banination is mostly done with.

a lot of people find these forums thru google, register, post a thread about their problem, and then become part of the community.
restricting new users from posting new topics would just make them post their problem in already existing topics.

it's a bad idea.

I love this quote. It's from the person who made the rule:

http://forums.nyyfans.com/showthread...ghlight=months

When i first arrived here, i was able to make a new thread after 42 minutes
Is it me or is there something wrong with that^^? When I join a forum, I want to jump in. I don't want to wait 6 months. Sure I'll do a search first, but SIX MONTHS?

My first post here was a question about my iMac back in the day. It would have been rather discouraging to not be able to post it until I was registered for xx days.

as far as this place goes anyway, I like it the way it is.

Besides, I just skip over spam threads anyhow (Cool new MAC site, check it out!!!!)

I have no idea what my first post was. Probably something dumb and silly somewhere here in Teh Louneg. I was here for over a year before I even managed to get a Mac, so it was definitely no computer question that made me sign up.

Meh, I said (quite politely) that I disagreed with the admin on a forum and got a permanent IP and nick ban, plus a threat of being reported to the police for trying to sabotage her personal property, out of it.

Then again, she was a complete psycho, so perhaps not the best example

Why not just have "first 10 posts must be approved by moderator." - then the spammers can't post new or in existing threads? I suppose you'd probably need a few more moderators though.

bloody hell, some sites are just mad... i've been on a few which have no moderation and are just flame-fests and trollery with rampant swearing for africa, which can be fun if you're in the mood but does get a little much sometimes. seems like there aren't too many where the right balance is found.

god knows i'd never have hung out here if there was a six month rule on new threads - my first posts were all "how do i do x" over in the ibook, os x, and apps forums. that said, could you set the forums up so that you have to do a search before you can start a new thread about cleaning a white ibook or why your battery level always stops ast 99%?

The craziest unmoderated, out of control forum I ever saw was the brief run of the Howard Stern forums. Every lowlife, sexist, racist jackass with a radio was there to spew bile. I guess I was naive to sign up and think reasoned people would be discussing the show. <okay, naive is putting it kindly>

They were so bad, Howard had the the plug pulled after just a few weeks.

I think many tend to exaggerate the existence nuisance posts on the forums. IMO, the admins/mods usually strike a great balance between privileges and control. Some will disagree, but I don't wish to see things change very much at all.

MacNN is like one of the better forums I've found online. Good people, helpful, and honestly not too many jerks out there screwing things up for everyone else.
