You don't need to wear a helmet to drive a car.

I’m halfway on helmets. Having a weight attached to your head seems like it could be bad in a collision.

I think the jury is well and truly out on the efficacy of motorcycle helmets.

https://smarter-usa.org/research/hel...effectiveness/

That said, a bike helmet only protects you. If you don't want to wear one, no-one else is getting hurt as a result. This is not true of masks and is the key aspect of wearing one: To protect others.

I can understand (but not agree with) the reticence to mandate mask wearing, but in truth you shouldn't have to make it law. What should be happening is that people should be getting massively shamed into wearing one. Not wearing one is an act of massively stupid selfish cuntery and literally every video I've watched of people refusing to and arguing holds that up as true.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Same in Indiana. And every weekend we're treated to the spectacle of packs of overweight, suburban men in do-rags, wheeling their shiny Harleys to this or the other craft brewery.

Was talking with a friend over the weekend. He has a niece who works at the Apple store in Indy. Apparently, when Apple closed most of their stores back in the spring, the Indy store remained open, and they started getting this unexpected influx of people from all over the nearby states wanting their Apple fix. They didn't quite expect that. She also told him that spurred them to start doing twice-a-week COVID testing on store employees.

Well, we now have our first close friend diagnosed with COVID. She’s a mental health counselor for a regional mental health center up in northern Indiana. By the contact tracing, she thinks she got it from a patient who had tested positive but didn’t tell anyone until after he had come in for his appointment.

Other than exhaustion and a headache, she says she’s doing okay so far. We see them two or three times a year (they have a cute place on a lake up there) but COVID shut down our get togethers this year.

Sorry to hear. Hope it continues to be a mild case.

How frustrating that we're headed into cold season, and every sniffle could be the worst-case scenario. I was out yesterday and felt a sneeze coming on - dust in the mask likely - and held it in so I wouldn't freak anyone out.

Having seen, first hand, what happens to a person who “only” hurts his head in a motorcycle collision, I am an avid supporter of motorcycle helmet wear. It is unnerving, at the very least, to have someone look absolutely through you...

I also have first hand experience with what can happen when COVID 19 doesn’t kill you. It’s amazing how bad off a person who was totally healthy a month ago can get when everything goes wrong.

Another point: there’s a direct correlation between dining in restaurants and increased infection rates - people who are recently diagnosed are highly likely to have dined in a restaurant within the assumed time period of infection. Can’t wear a mask while you’re eating, right...

Anyway, CDC has finally pointed out that masks protect the wearer as well as other people. And we all know just how altruistic most people are, so it’s not a good strategy to expect all those other clowns to wear a mask to protect you.

Maybe we should be talking about attempted murder. Because that's what it is. Gotta admit, I'm getting tired of these kinds of stories. Where they hurt other people, because it's just too inconvenient for them to give a crap.

I think there should be a law that anyone who refuses to wear a helmet automatically becomes an organ donor.

I really don't get it. Even if you are a selfish bastard and only think about yourself, all of us have close relatives (e. g. parents or grandparents, a relative with cancer) who are in the high-risk pool. Just to protect them, it should be in your own interest to be careful. Wearing a mask is such a small thing to do, I don't even get why it is controversial.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

...because I sure am. Wife and I got tested yesterday, came back positive today. In hindsight, I think my symptoms hit Thursday. I was extra tired that night but figured it was too much food and wine. Headache Friday but again, too much wine. Had junk in my throat Saturday but I was cutting lots of trim with a miter saw. Put my mask on and felt a lot better. Felt achy Sunday/Monday but assumed that was because I was working on my truck. Tuesday morning started coughing so I left work. No fever, but wife was at 99.1 so we pulled the 2yo from day care and went to get tested.

No idea where it came from. We've done grocery delivery through November, curbside pickup at Target, zero guests in our home, went into zero other homes. I'm masked up at work and generally socially distant, but the majority of my coworkers don't mask unless we're having a conversation. Daughter's day care was closed for a couple of weeks due to too many positive cases, she was only in school on Tuesday/Wednesday of last week so it seems less likely. The only other thing I can think of is stopping at a crappy gas station to use the bathroom in small town Iowa the Saturday before Thanksgiving, but that was just a few minutes, we were masked, and we stayed away from people.

Grateful that it's just a mild cough so far for me. Kids have no symptoms.

I was working side by side with my intern all last week and also this Monday. It's loud out on the floor so we're talking loudly and close to each others' faces. We're side by side on the floor and in the office for hours every day, we are cozied up on the golf cart together driving around the plant. But we're masked up 100% of the time. She got sent home due to close contact with me per company policy, but fortunately she just tested negative. MASK UP PEOPLE.

So it's official we in the UK got the vaccine first because, well, we are just better than you.

Don't get too upset, we are better than the French and the Belgians as well apparently.

I hope you get better well soon, Laminar. Thank you for taking precautions, this is much appreciated. Even though you’ve contracted Covid-19 anyway, in aggregate your behavior has helped slow down the spread. We all have loved ones with pre-existing conditions who rely on people wearing masks and taking all other necessary precautions.

We're doing the math and the only conclusion we can come to is that we got it from my daughter's day care.

Here's the timeline as we see it.

Friday Nov 6th: Positive case exposed my daughter in her room at day care
Monday Nov 9th: Another positive case exposed my daughter in her room at day care
Tuesday Nov 10th: They find out about the Friday exposure, send all members of her classroom home for two weeks
Wednesday Nov 11th: Many more positive tests from the center, they close the whole center down for two weeks.
Friday Nov 13th: They find out about the Nov 9th exposure, extend quarantine for affected kids

First symptoms typically happen at 5 days after exposure, but can be 2-14 days. So my daughter's infection could initiate anywhere from Nov 8th - Nov 23rd.

Nov 24th: No fever, no obvious symptoms. Daughter returns to day care.

Nov 26th: My first symptom: Exhaustion, passed out on the couch at 7:45pm.

If I was infected 5 days before first symptoms, that puts my exposure date as Nov 21st. That was the day I took the kids on a 6 hour road trip to pick up car parts from a junkyard (paid ahead of time, they left the parts sitting outside the gate for no-contact pickup). Strangely, daughter fell asleep basically right away in the car that morning. Super uncharacteristic for her, she hates sleeping. In hindsight, she was likely infected and exhausted. And I spent six hours in a car with her.

Nov 30th: Wife's first symptoms. Likely picked up from me the week prior when I was contagious but not showing symptoms.

Dec 1st: Wife and I test positive.

Dec 3rd: Daughter tests negative.

It's a bit of a stretch that her infection would show up so late after exposure, but it's possible and it's the only direct line we have to a positive case. It's also interesting that neither she nor I ever showed a fever. I'm checked when I arrive at work, she's checked at the door at day care. During her quarantine we checked daily. Wife made it to 99.1 but no one showed >100.4 fever that everyone is looking for.

The fact that she tested negative most likely indicates the viral load was on the downswing (late stage infection) and was no longer high enough to trigger a positive. If my wife or I had passed to her, she would have been on the upswing or near peak and would have tested positive. But the negative test confirms for us that she had it first and passed it to us, which lines up with the timeline and the only link we have to a confirmed positive case.

Also, for those of you looking for good, reliable, scientific info on covid, wife and I have been follwing Laurel Bristow on Instagram, she's a published infectious disease researcher. Check her stories/highlights, she has regular updates where she shares the latest data, info, and breaks down the state of the science.

All these places doing temp checks, a temperature is a rare symptom. But the temp check makes people feel reassured, I guess.

Socialist medicine eh? Who'd have thunk it.

Ps Obviously Pfizer is a multinational company not a UK one and the actual vaccine was created in Belgium by Turkish scientists. (apparently). All it really proves is that our wonderful current leaders are absolutely shameless dicks.

Pfizer’s vaccine was developed by BioNtech in Germany, not Belgium. And the company founders are German citizens with Turkish backgrounds, yes.

And BioNTech has received several hundred million Euros for vaccine development from the German government — a good investment it seems. Pfizer’s role was and is helping with large-scale trials, production and with distribution.

@Laminar
That’s some nice detective work right there.

In case anyone understands German, one of the leading Covid researchers in Germany is on a regular podcast (Das Coronavirus-Update) where they discuss the state-of-the-art when it comes to research. He and his team developed the first viable PCR test for Covid-19. Also, have a listen to Kara Swisher’s episode of Swing, where she interviews the two German researchers and owners of BioNTech.

Retired Presidents Obama, Bush (Jr) and Bill Clinton have all pledged to:
Former US presidents Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton have pledged to get vaccinated for coronavirus on television to promote the safety of the vaccine.
Once a vaccine in approved that is. As I read it, they haven't agreed to take it together. But it wouldn't surprise me if that's how it works out.

President-Elect Biden and Harris have pledged to take the vaccine in public. Presumably that means TV and/or live streaming.
The president-elect and vice-president-elect, Kamala Harris, have also committed to receiving coronavirus vaccinations as soon as possible when, as expected, the first vaccines are approved by US regulators.
President Trump has said ... something about mail-in ballots again. Nothing that I know of about vaccination plans.

We didn't beat anyone. All our worthless asshole government did was approve it faster than anyone else. If I had offered them a bucket of turds and told them it could cure covid they'd have given me a contract for millions a few weeks ago. I'm pretty sure the vaccine will work fine and be safe because its built on many years of work and not cobbled together in months as many seem to think but our government wouldn't know a safe vaccine from a bag of nitroglycerin. Thats already on fire. They are trying to take credit for something they had nothing to do with. All they did was place an order. Which they did with every company that said they were working on a vaccine as far as I can tell. By approving it first maybe that means we get the first batches but essentially they are gambling (as far as they know) with our lives. In the unlikely event the vaccine causes a zombie apocalypse, they'll blame Pfizer or more likely the EU then declare that Britain is great before buggering off to some isolated tropical island somewhere with whatever's left in the treasury.

Other than that, socialised medicine really is great though.

Yup. I've started to wonder what percentage of this is anti-mask idiots vs people who think they're special but everyone else has to comply vs those who assume that if something is allowed (indoor dining, retail shopping, haircuts, etc.) that it must be 100% safe.

Is there anyone else that's getting tested on the regular just for peace of mind? Just me then? Cool

You can do that? Where i live, you must show symptoms or have possibly been exposed. I suppose there's some wiggle room in the last case, but I also believe you still have to have a doctor's order for it. As far as I know, there isn't any "just because" testing going on here, unfortunately.

I'm very privileged to work for a university that established a system where asymptomatic staff, faculty and students can get tested as often as you want. Staff still coming to campus are required to get testing, as are some students.

I've done the "self administered swab the tonsils", the "nurse sticks a stick halfway to your brain", the "self administered barely up the nose" and the "spit test". Our county is efficient, so the longest I've waited for results is 3 days. The shortest is 5 hours.

According to this report, his son was diagnosed positive two frigging weeks ago. CNN is reporting Rudy has been hospitalized (I'd link to the story, but they use that damned annoying little video window that follows you down the page, and I refuse to subject y'all to that horror.). And, the Arizona legislature had been closed due to their recent exposure to Rudy.

Yup. I've started to wonder what percentage of this is anti-mask idiots vs people who think they're special but everyone else has to comply vs those who assume that if something is allowed (indoor dining, retail shopping, haircuts, etc.) that it must be 100% safe.
The thing I keep going back to is that if it seems like the response to a pandemic was an overreaction, it was probably the right response. But dumb people don't realize that, they see low numbers or hospitals that aren't packed to the gills and utterly exhausting medical staff (due entirely to the portion of the population that is complying with pandemic safety regulations), they bitch and complain about how the gub'mint took away their liberty and "all y'all dumbasses that are wearing masks are stupid, this is no big deal!"

My Alderman owns a restaurant.

Guess which restaurant just got busted for indoor dining.

You're ahead of the game, so long as he's not the owner that tried to drive away with a Police Deputy on the hood of his car.

Here in CA, some of our more worthless Sheriffs have announced they won't be enforcing the lockdown. Because the Governor is a hypocrite (some truth to it - he dined out against his own advice) and because Freedom. No mention of the hospitals getting slammed.

Sheriffs instead plan to continue voluntary persuasion against people & businesses. You know, the policies that weren't working. Because of all the scoffers who blew that advice off.

People in the city are pretty much on board with lockdowns. It’s downstate where we get concentrated “muh freedoms” and lawsuits thrown at the Governor.

The Alderman apologized, and said it was a mistake, but had to add the qualifier “it was only regulars”.

Not sure I understand why that matters.

Bonus Alderman fact: his cousin starred in The Craft.
