Photoshop on the left, Preview on the right.
I get that distortion on some jpegs in tiger in Preview and Safari...
Back in 10.3 it did not look like that...
Anyone else?

No issues with preview for me. Today the gaming site my girlfriend and I help with put out our newsletter (which I make on my iBook). I noticed that web based email accounts showed the newsletter incorrectly and took some screen shots of it in yahoo, hotmail, gmail and so on. Converted them to JPG from TIFF and sent to the admin of the site. I didn't notice any problems with how the JPGs looked.
Make sure the quality is to the highest when converting in Preview. By default its 3 notches back from maximum.

You think that is bad? You should see some of my porn collection in Preview.
I want a refund.

No, these are some images right from the source, made right from world of warcraft.
They looked fine in OS X 10.3, but now they look crazy blured in OS X 10.4.
This ain't jpeg artifacts either, its like the images ain't rendered properly no more, and its prolly due to a bad implementation of the jpeg spec by WoW (and other things I bet) that is now not being overlooked when rendering the image, now 10.4 renders it improperly.
Kinda like Internet explorer on windows rendering bad code properly anyway, and if they made it conform to standards more, many sites would have rendering errors.
Ill send blizz a note.

I have the same here.
I experienced it after generating a new photo gallery for publication on my website. First I blamed iPhoto and/or Galerie (the generator app) for rendering some photos badly, but in the end it was only Safari 2.0 displaying them incorrectly.
Check, for example, this photo in Safari 2.0. Safari ruins the left edges of the windmills by making them blurry and shadowy. Looks like some kind of purple fringing on a cheap digital camera :-)
Then load the same page in Firefox. Or drag the photo to the desktop and open in Photoshop or another image viewing/editing app (don't know about preview :-) ). You will see that the image is perfectly sharp and that the left side of the windmills looks way better than it does in Safari.
My conclusion: something's definitely wrong with the way Safari 2.0 renders jpegs.

Are they both at actual size? If not, maybe there's some funkiness with Preview's image scaling in Tiger.

Some screenshots would really help us troubleshoot your issue.

I've seen this -- it appears to be a bug in preview. What's going on is Preview is sometimes incorrectly reading the dimensions of the image (how, I don't know). It scales the image up to the size that it thinks it should be at, then scales it back down to the bounding rectangle of the image. Thus the distortion.
When you open one of these JPEGs up, try clicking on the "Actual size" button in preview -- it will scale the image up 25% or so (to what preview *thinks* the size of the image is).
I've looked at the same images in numerous programs, and they are fine in everything but Preview; it is very likely their bug.

You are right. I must correct myself.
I had been comparing the top part of the image only and there it's identical in Safari and Firefox. In the area you are emphasizing now, I can see the blurring in Safari very well too now. That's a strange bug.

I'm guessing that this is actually a bug in QuickTime, which both Safari and Preview use to render JPEGs.

Has anyone here posted a bug report at Apple? This definitely deserves one.

I have a similar problem watching videos, not images: after upgrade to 10.4 (full erase and install), I am not able to see AT ALL a good deal of my .avi and .mpg videos, and the others look VERY bad: pixellated, full of lines, etc. etc. Only a very few are pristin as before.
Using same software as before: divx, QT, VLC, MPlayer: they all work bad...
Any help? Could this have to do with the new Quarz Extreme feature?
Andrea

Wait for updates to the codecs - divx at least is the cause of a few issues (such as crashes) with QT7 from what I have seen on various forums/sites. However, I have not had any issues with VLC myself, but I haven't used it a great deal in 10.4 yet.

Here's a particularly embarrassing and egregious example from the GraphicConverter website. The poor guy is trying to show how much better a 16KB JP2 image looks compared to the 30KB JPEG.
Safari makes a total blurry hash out of the JP2 image.
To be fair, Firefox doesn't display the JP2 image at all.
Which, given the way it looks here, is a better outcome for Lemke Software.

The strange thing is, if you open the JPEG 2000 image in a new window, it displays fine.

The really strange thing is, if you reload the page enough times, it will randomly look fine some of the time and screwed up the rest of the time.
