The opening weekend of screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and director Danny Boyle's film Steve Jobs is being heralded as a success, based on initial takings reports. Despite launching in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, the dramatic biopic allowed Boyle to achieve his best opening weekend average of all movies in his career so far, as well as having the highest Per-Theater Average (PTA) of any movie released this year.

Though appearing on four screens, Steve Jobs brought in almost $521,000 in total, or a PTA of just over $130,000. Deadline notes that Oscar-winning hit Slumdog Millionaire, also a Boyle movie, raked in over $360,000 across ten theaters for its debut, earning an average of $36,000 PTA. While it is high for this year's releases, last year's opening for American Sniper achieved a PTA of approximately $158,000, while The Grand Budapest Hotel made $202,000 PTA.

It is worth noting that the opening weekend is only a handful of screens, and is likely to have been attended by fans of Boyle, Sorkin, and Apple itself, so may not necessarily be an indicator that it will be a box office hit when it reaches more screens. A wider release is due in major cities including San Francisco on October 16, with a full nationwide rollout due on October 23.

So far, it appears reviewers are giving generally positive reviews for Steve Jobs. On Metacritic, 22 out of 26 recorded "Critic Reviews" are classed as positive, with three mixed and one negative review, while Rotten Tomatoes rates it at 87 percent by all critics, 76 percent from what it identifies as top critics.

LOL, yea statistics are great....you can make them sound good or bad. I'd hardly say this movie was some amazing production when it was only released in 4 locations.

Let see how it will score on nationwide Oct 23. The hype of Steve Jobs is starting to fade away pretty quickly.

Aaron Sorkin is too soapbox-y for me, but he IS a brilliant writer. I think it will do well, unless people are tired of hearing about Jobs (which could be the case).
