Does anyone know, why do we want OpenGL 1.4? I'm not wild about the idea of my game framerates dropping by 50%.

Also, I read a rumor that with 10.2.3 there would be a new video driver that had Radeon 9000 for Powerbook enhancements. At this point, my 9000 is using a 8500 driver apparently . . .
Is this at all true?

"Adds a Canadian English language spell checking dictionary."

So *that's* why the update is 51MB!

Has the Finder been updated in this release?? The version number under 10.2.2 was just v10.2 with the version string "Mac OS X Finder 10.2".

Has this changed in 10.2.3?

"Includes OpenGL 1.4 which contains improvements for all systems."

Apple thinks OpenGL 1.4 is a good thing.

From the KB:

Improves iPhoto slide show function on some systems which use ATI Rage 128 graphics accelerator chips.
* Allows for improved results with applications that switch emulated address spaces, such as Connectix Virtual PC.
* Improves compatibility for OpenGL-based software on some computers that use ATI Rage 128 graphic accelerator chips; improves reliability for OpenGL-based software while Screen Saver effects are enabled on some computers that use ATI Rage 128 graphic accelerator chips.

------------------------

Does this mean my TiBook 500MHz is going to feel snappier(TM)?

No change to the problem reading some files on some DVD-Rs.

Not sure if I can see any real differences, actually, aside from those different buttons in some apps.

I see some speed-up. I cannot pin point where the speed is coming from, but I do see some speed.

Wow... doesn't even work when i use Duality to restore the aqua theme.

It looks so funnie with no controls... if i click there, the window still closes, minimizes and maximizes though. Its just the skin that's messed.

Otherwise, the OS seems Snappier. heh.

On the change of the button wigits for brushed metal apps, looks like the graphite ones got the worst result, having no contrast on the bottom. Looks like it was designed on the colored widgits, not even considering the graphite ones.

I'm not at home right now, so I can't check, but has the FTP access in the Finder been upgraded to "usable" status? Or does it still often hang if you connect to a server that wants a username/password?

Oh, about the problems with the themes: I suspect they added a new resource to Extras.rsrc instead of changing the old one, which is why you're getting nothingnesses for those new widgets when you apply a theme. I have no doubt that themes will quickly be updated for 10.2.3, but until that happens, your choices are either to do it yourself using ThemePark (it's not hard) or use DeMetallifizer to, well, demetallifize the windows and use the default widgets for your theme of choice.

All this talk about the brushed metal widgets is a waste of time.

I can't believe you guys haven't noticed the big change yet - they fixed keyboard navigation in the Open dialog boxes in Carbon!

Sorry, but after almost 2 years of them being unusable, we just use them any more.

....I ran Xbench before and after the update and my Quartz scores were much higher, nearly 20-25%, some were more, some less.

Also, my UI test went from 27fps to 41 fps on a Radeon 8500.

YMMV.

10.2.3 installed fine on my 700 mhz iBook. Nothing appears borked so that's a good thing.

(And yes...window resizes do appear to be snappier.....but not snappy enough).

So has the useless development team at Apple managed to fix the software update utility to work with proxy-authentication (which they broke with 10.2)?

I can't believe they can really be that hopeless.

I don't want to have to install third party utilities just to get the first party, bundled, OS-integrated utilities to work!!!

In the meantime, has anyone found where the stand-along package can be downloaded without software update?

Of course.

Of course they released 10.2.3 the very day I leave college (where I have DSL) to go home for Christmas (where my parents have dialup that maxes out at 28.8 due to lousy phone lines). And I won't be back on DSL 'till January 6.

Of course.

"Improves iPhoto slide show function on some systems which use ATI Rage 128 graphics accelerator chips."

That's from the kbase article re: 10.2.3.

You know what? It's BS. I've got an ATI RAGE Pro 128. iPhoto slideshows were smooth in 10.2.2. Under 10.2.3, there is an irritating and distracting flutter during a slide show in iPhoto as one photo transitions to the next.

Nope, I've tried that a million times...the "Utilities" folder icon is un-changable due to an Apple bug that needs to be fixed.

You are right, that folder is very stubborn.. I used iconCompose to make a killer folder for it and am storing it until they fix this bug.
