Is there a keyboard short cut to switch between windows within an application? specifically, I would like to do this in microsoft word on a Mac. I use cmd-tab for switching between apps, but donno how to do it within an app.

In case you aren't sure what that key is, its the key directly above the tab key and just left of the #1 key.

Unless you have an 'international' keyboard, and then it is damn hard to find.

Expos * is your friend. Hit F10 to see all the open windows in the frontmost application. You can either point and click at the one you want, or tab through the windows.
* Mac OS 10.3 Panther users only.

Chilll....I do know where that key is. But, why was the it chosen to be cmd-tilda? Is there a reason for it? It seems like a wierd choice to me.

My guess is : because it's right above the tab key

exactly.
You command-tab to switch applications, command-` to switch windows within an application - similar keys for similar functions.

...because you'd have to use the < key instead in that case, which is to the right of the left Shift key.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.
