Do you think Apple will complete it's digital hub with a device that will stream protected content from the iTMS?

As it stands there isn't an easy solution to doing this without first burning those files to a CD and then ripping it again to AIFF (w/o fidelity loss).

The SqueezeBox looks perfect but of course it doesn't play DRM protected content. I don't think any device on the market today does though.

Not likely. Apple removed the ability to share iTunes libraries over the Internet with iTunes 4.01 (IIRC).

Try NiceCast. http://www.versiontracker.com/php/se...cecast&x=0&y=0

You'll notice Apple doesn't offer this on their OS X downloads site. Why would that be I wonder?

Now when I say stream protected content I mean stream as in a Home device like the SqueezeBox. The SqueezeBox can stream music from iTunes to your stereo only.

I doubt they will, but it would be nice...I'd buy it. I miss the ability to stream music over the internet

Well, I would be more interested in such a box is it offered video streams as well (DVD, SVCD, VCD, Quicktime, etc.).

If they also included a remote that would interact with OS X and let you navigate music/video as well, I think it would be interesting.

Again, this would all fall under the "digital hub idea"

But Apple would probably charge $500 for something like above.

You can use the free QuickTime Streaming Server and QT Broadcaster to do this. It's not nearly as easy and elegant as iTunes was ... but it works and its free. You can stream video as well if you have enough upload bandwidth.

I'd like to see a stereo component, with an ipod interface, infrared remote with the same physical interface, an onscreen display similar to iTunes full size hard drives inside (upto 4) a combo drive, so you could watch your dvds with it and burn audio cds. A full range of connectors on the back standard audio/video, ethernet and firewire (plus another on the front).
It could play music shared from other computers in the house, as well as share the music on it's disks. stream dvds to other computers, sync with ipods. iTunes in a box.

As long as the price wasn't crazy, people would buy them...

I was going to suggest the same sort of thing as :XI:, but I think there is a simpler solution for Apple. What I see is an iPod 'SuperDock' with an IR remote and phono connection. This would be the simplest way for them to introduce this functionality and avoids the pitfalls of any kind of streaming/sharing. Then everyone in the household can have an iPod and use it in whichever room they like; this sells more iPods.

Except the screen would be a bit small to see from across the living room. I do like the 'iDeck' sort of idea, but I think it'd be too specialist.

edit: Should this be in the Lounge maybe?
