I've seen this message a couple of times in my system log. I thought it might have something to do with problems with an external FireWire hard disk, but the message has appeared when it wasn't connected.

Any ideas?

Thanks a million! It does look as if I get messages being directed to /dev/console *before* I was logged in. This results in the "syslogd: /dev/console: Input/output error" message.
