I stick to two under the posted limit and only drive in the left lane, it's the safest.

135 on a highway.
190 on a track.
The highway was more thrilling.

I believe I've hit 130 on the 5 from San Francisco to LA. Might have hit 135, not sure (the car—V6 '99 Camaro—technically was speed limited to 115 or something, but it didn't seem to actually work after the first couple times...). Whatever my top speed was, the average must have been around 95 because I did SF to LA in about 4 hours.

I used to do that, but then some guy flashed some strobe lights at me and held up a cardboard sign. Boy, that really taught me a lesson!

OT: About 115-120 in a BMW 330Ci convertible. Top down. On the highway, coming home from Peoria. I'm not sure if the co-worker I was with was more mortified, thrilled, or just happy to be home quickly.

Might get flak for this but gone past 120 on multiple occasions. The fastest I've *noticed* was about 140 while keeping pace with a subaru wrx (at 2am or so, totally clear roads). Most of these have been on the 5 driving out of San Francsico or San Diego area. Car handled like on rails each time tho.

I only drive the speed limit. Cuz that's safe. And if you go over it you're endangering everyone's life. It's better to rape babies than it is to drive fast on public roads.

120 in my 1966 Plymouth Sport Fury. it was a barely used secondary highway with no other cars, straight as an arrow, but i was 17 and totally stupid.
it may have been faster, since the needle was pinned at 120.

105 on my brand new 1978 Kawasaki KZ400 motorcycle on route 15 in Idaho. (yep, back in 1978) I couldn't get any more out of it. Actually scared the **** out of me and never tried it again.

148 in the Contour, 115 on the Nighthawk, 120 on the Sabre. With the new rear end I put on the Sabre, it's supposedly capable of redlining in 6th which would be 160 or so. No desire to try.

~150 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a Corvette.
On public roads the most I ever went was about 95 in a Chevrolet Blazer, just to see if it could. It can.

I dunno about US boats, but car speedometers here tend to overshoot on the side of safety.
My VW van topped out at around 160 (downhill), but GPS told me it's under 150.
Metric, of course. I have no idea what that is in obsolete.

145mph passenger in a Dodge Stealth (non-turbo) downhill.
Fastest I've ever gone while driving would be only be a bit above 100. Did it in my old VW Jetta, which I was surprised it could make it to 100, and did 105 in my moms older Dodge Caravan with a 3.6 V6.
Now I drive 68mph and own a pickup, my wreckless days are well behind me.

When my nephew was visiting from the states, an R8 went flying past us on the M4 somewhere between Swindon and Newbury. He was dying to see it, so I got the Audi up to about 125 to catch up. At least 125 was on the speedo. I'd guess it was really around 115.

I can so hear the conversation with your brother or sister when they found out about it. My sister would freak out if I did that speed with one of my nieces in the car.

He is by brother's kid and I was moderately worried I'd be in trouble- so I called him an fessed up immediately. He was, surprisingly, not angry at all. I think he was secretly pleased that I risked a big old ticket to show his son something cool.

180 km/h, which comes to 112 miles/hour. Legally, I might add - this was on the autobahn (Germany, no speed limit). I was late for a flight.

95 in a 76 Ford Elite. It could have done much more (I was only racing a chevette for gods' sake) but the road curved ahead and I got sensible.
Nowadays I try to keep it under 80. With my current car's suspension on its way out, that's gonna be more like 60.

140mph in a Mercedes 450SLC.
I rarely speed that fast anymore, too many cars. However, the desert is great for speed, although perception goes down because of the expansive terrain.
Doing 85mph on 3rd avenue at 4AM in Manhattan - that's perception of speed, like the trench in Star Wars.
yee-ha!

Not even close as the vast majority of aircraft take off well below 200mph.

The fastest I've ever driven is probably about 85-90 mph for a couple miles on an interstate where the speed limit was 70.
I've been in cars on the Autobahn in Germany (being driven by someone else) going about 125 mph (200 km/h), though.
My favorite Autobahn story is the time I was in the car with my cousin driving. I was in the front passenger seat next to him and my aunt (his mother, who was 70 at the time) was in the back seat. My cousin sped up to 160 km/h (100 mph), and said to me, "Look! We're going 160 km/h! Do you want to go 200?" Before I could say anything, a loud "NO!" came from the back seat. My aunt was NOT interested in going any faster than 160.

About 110 for me.
My brother and father (both big car enthusiasts) like to go down to the racetrack and frequently break 200 in various supercars. I have no interest.

Actually your speedo is off by a percentage, so the greater the speed, the greater the error. If it's off by 5mph at 60mph, it can be off over twice as much at 120mph. The best way to truly have accurate speed measurements is with a GPS device.

I figured that the 145mph shown in the Dodge Stealth was a bit of an overestimation, I do know that the tach was absolutely pinned though.

I would not say that. A Boxter is more a roadster. It's for blasting through canyon curves, not Intestates.

Correct. Most car speedos are off by 5+ mph at 70, and are eve further off over 100. If you're going 70, you're actually only doing 62 - 65.

105 in a '63 Buick Skylark. I was still accelerating, but came up on a pack of cars. 2 weeks later, the right front wheel fell off when I was turning into a parking lot at 5 mph.
Had the new (to me) Celica up to 90 and didn't even realize it a few weeks ago -- I was getting on the freeway, and just forgot to look. I went from 9 years in a Pathfinder with a very low revving engine to a car that just wants to turn 5000 RPM. Dangerous.
