I am trying to find a big HD to put in my laptop. Its a 2.4GHZ Macbook Pro with 2GB of RAM. I'd like to get 250GB or more. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks I really appreciate it!

320GB for $180, 250GB for $140

The MBP is such a hassle to get to the HDD, I'd take the 320.

(For those of us who aren't brave enough to rip the guts out of a $2700 laptop?)

An apple store, or any apple authorized repair or service center. Although it will cost a premium, as it can be quite a pain to do.

I'm going to fill this 160GB fairly quick. (I'm down to 29GB now.)

It's really not that difficult. Just follow the iFixit guide and carefully keep track of all your screws.

I don't think the Apple store will replace any part of a laptop with a third party part will they? Perhaps an Apple authorized repair center would but not an actual Apple Store.

mbp ifixit guide is a cake walk through...after a fall had my mbp up and running in about 30 min, and im not that hardware savvy.

Most of the 250Gig or more drives (Toshiba, etc...) only run at 5400 rpm. I just installed the 200 Gig Hitachi at 7200 rpm and the performance improvement is very good...if you can live with "only" 200 Gigs.

Give it another 6-12 months and they'll have the perform of the big boys up there.

Yep, I postedin another thread but thats the one I just put in mine, got it in an external case for $99 at Best Buy. The 7200 RPM drives make a noticeable difference.

Ditto whomever said to use the iFixit guide. I've done lots of Powerbook etc surgery but I always pull up their guides. Just pay attention and you'll be fine.

I wasnt pyaing attention and did a good job if jamming a screw into the video out screw terminal instead of the actual screw hole next to it. Oops.

hmm, given all the positive comments about a HD upgrade following iFixIt's guide, I just might do the same this weekend. I've used up my 120 GB HD (I went from a 30 GB HD in my iBook to 120GB in my MBP, and took me less than a month to get to dangerously low levels of HD space... and I "only" have 30 GB of music and video on the HD).

Is there much of a decrease in battery life and heat generation when you bump up to a 7200 rpm HD?

I was opposed to doing this project myself but I've been inspired by this as well. My wife's MBP is showing its age... with only 80 GB of HD space, she is getting desperate. I think I'll upgrade her this Spring.

+1 on the ifixit guide. This week I replaced my DVD drive in my MB using their guide.



Notice what's on the screen of my 17" Mac... ifixit.

Great directions and quite easy to accomplish if you pay attention and have the right tools.
