When an SMS arrives one is presented with a dialog box with two choices, 'Okay' and 'Reply' (or somesuch).

I read the SMS, click Okay since I don't need to reply, and it's dropped into my messages app AS UNREAD. If several SMSs arrive the last one is shown. In either case, one or many, the menubar notifier shows an unread SMS symbol. This is really aggravating, and makes that whole notification worthless. I want to know if some SMS has slipped through while I've been sleeping, or distracted.

Is there some tweak for this? It's making me crazy (or crazier).

I have been using the iPhone since it was out and I don't think such options exists - at least on non jailbreak iPhone.

It's the most aggravating UI issue; there's no way to see if there are any SMSs you've not already dismissed.

And don't get me started on not being able to attach different SMS tones to people or services. Grrrrrrrr.

Do you know of any such option on jailbroken iPhones? My google-fu seems weak today.
