It seems to me that the following statmement found on Apple's site;

is completely redundant seeing as Renderman doesn't run on OS X nor even on Linux for PPC, just Intel/Linux, Windows XP/NT and SGI.

puzzled - perhaps a hint?

They probably have versions running on X for testing purposes and viability. Might see a release soon if they decide to release it to the public.
Much prefer Mental Ray though. Most off the shelf software is moving to it as the default renderer, such as Softimage, Alias/Wavefront, Discreet, etc. IMO it's a far better renderer and an OS X preview release of version 3.1 is available to developers. ILM have moved much of their rendering to Mental Ray too, as well as moving to Softimage XSI as the main animation tool.

but why a renderman software icon in the panther dock
isn't renderman just a rendering engine??
