Favicons worked in on my webpage in 10.3, but not in 10.4. Safari 2.0 doesn't see them, though Firefox does. Every other page I go too does not appear to have this issue. Here is the code I have for them on my webpage.
<LINK REL="shortcut icon" HREF="http://www.joshuazimmerman.com/favicon.ico"></LINK>
<LINK REL="icon" HERF="http://www.joshuazimmerman.com/favicon.png" TYPE=image/png"></LINK>

...Errr... I think I'd change the title of the thread then!
I use the following and it seems to work fine:-
Code:
<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
Maybe you need to explicitly set the 'type' to image/x-icon for Safari to see it properly? That, and I've also heard many stories about the cache (particularly bookmarked URLS) being an issue. If you can completely trash your cache and restart see if that helps

I actually can't find the option to change the name of the thread in the new MacNN GUI.
I made those changes, nothing happened. Safari still doesn't see the favicon. Don't know why. 1.3 was fine with it. It doesn't have problems with anyone else's favicon.
