My bet is on this being an Apple approved leak... but why. They can't even put a good battery in a watch.

Don't you understand? People don't want a car that goes farther, they want one that's lighter and thinner!

Actually, I'd think battery technology for a car is less challenging than for a watch. There's more space, and weight can be compensated for in other ways.

My take: I don't necessarily think this will yield a real product, but with all the cash on hand, Apple might as well do some R&D in an area that can use a good dose of Think Different mentality.

the bar would be pretty high.. they can't make "just another car", it would need to revolution the world of cars as we know it... and I don't think the technologies needed are there yet..

What would you like to see on an Apple Car?

The interesting twist here is the goal of electric car tech has always been to make them more affordable than regular cars. Not something Apple is known for.

I imagine the tech of this project intersects with other areas they're interested in, not that i could name any.

I doubt there's even an ounce of truth to this rumor.

However, I hope I am wrong and next year Apple unveils a flying car.

Actually...
Battery maker accuses Apple of appropriating battery scientists | Ars Technica
Last week, we brought you news that Apple appears to be working on electric car technology. Those rumors are edging toward !CONFIRMED! status thanks to news that Apple is being sued by battery maker A123 Systems for poaching staff in order to develop a "large scale battery division."

large scale battery manufacturing tech (even though this article says automotive) can be applied to anything requiring a lot of power OR reliable power for a long duration - for laptops, watches, phones, with significant reductions to space. I just don't buy the car thing.

And the iCar will sell for 6 million dollars and have only 3-4 options. They will change the kind of charging ports every other year, and they will no longer support them in 3 years.

I think its a shrewd move to waste Samsung's resources. Apple has leaked the info in the knowledge that Samsung will copy it and try to beat it to market thereby producing a very expensive and not very good product that will ruin their reputation by killing 10% of early adopters when it turns out the brakes are an in-app purchase that don't work if you don't use 6 factor authentication to log into the Play store before you set off.

If it does turn out to be real, do you think it will refuse to park near Samsung and Microsoft stores citing compatibility issues?

What would you like to see on an Apple Car?
Apple will have to do a quantum leap beyond Prius and Tesla. I would love to see a car that is largely self driving, with features such as independent motors at each wheel, which among other things would make parallel parking child's play. Surround sensing with automatic adjustments that keep the car at an optimal distance from other vehicles/obstacles, the ability to sense many cars ahead for slowdowns and to find the optimal speed adjustment to avoid front/back collisions, including signaling thru the brake lights to the car behind (implementing an attention grabbing pattern with visual intensity proportional to the rate of deceleration). iPhone directions able to be implemented directly, with lane switching, turning and exiting implemented predictively based on the surround sensing. Communication with other close by iCars to co-ordinate such maneuvers. If we all put our heads together we'll design the future

That said, as an inveterate stick shift driver and control freak, being driven like that would drive me batty. Once I'm 90, perhaps, but only if I absolutely need it.

What if its not a whole car? What if its just the interior as an option from several other makers?

Dash, seats, console, ICE, door cards, the works. Speakers by Beats.

So what happens when a bug-ridden automatic update hoses the firmware and leaves you stranded in Albuquerque??
