Once effgee gets back from Germany (where he is now, on another job, not vacation), he’ll start sifting through this thread, and the bugs noted here should then all be taken care of, one way or another.

Won’t be another two years, but he won’t be getting through the list over a weekend, either.

Maybe a summary of all major points could be made ( sorry if that's already been suggested, or even put together, I just popped into this thread to ask if there ever was a "reply" button in the "private messages" "inbox" section, could only find a "quote" button myself )

Tone down the green slightly and maybe adjust the yellow to more of a mellow colour and i'd say I prefer no. 3.

Unfortunately, it turns out that Frank is stuck on dialup until next Wednesday, so that's when the serious bug fixing will begin. He should be able to get to some of the more urgent issues this weekend, but that will include things like the image verification bug in registering a new user and not stuff like icons. But yes, we are aware of all the proposed fixes and will be going through them.

That's because the "read PM" page uses the same template to display a post as this page here. Instead of showing a list of posts, it simply displays a single "post". And for this page here, effgee never liked the "reply" label on the button in the old design because it doesn't imply the quoting functionality – OTH, a button labeled "reply with quote" would be waaay too large and so he chose "quote" as the next best option.

Just one of those times where re-using the same template in various places isn't necessarily the best idea but that's how vB is written and there's nothing he can do about that.

My reaction is mixed. As a work of art, one of the best sites I've ever seen. The shadings, proportions, the way I keep getting drawn in and the site keeps coming out at me is masterful. In fact there is little I would change.

Functionally, I'd find it easier if there was not so much white space, the contrast created by the lines in the previous version made it easier to read and focus on. Also, I think there was more color previously, this design has a blue bias that is hard on my eyes, a very personal thing, of course. So a tad more contrast even in the buttons, to make the printed areas more clear. Also let us have our post numbers back.

In sum, visually this like going from OS 9 to Aqua.

Not having read beyond the first 10 posts, I have probably echoed others. If so, please take it as an endorsement.

Where is the UNIX forum?

I hate that the list of forums is not correct at the bottom of the pages. Also, I used to just scroll all the way to the bottom to see it, but now it is just above the bottom of the page meaning that I have to scroll up a bit.

The pretty factor is nice, but surely it should not come at the expense of usability.

Regarding re-organization.......

When we had the web developer subforum there were two sticky threads, you can get to them by going to the web developer forum via the footer links, but just in case they disappear at a later date................ ( couldn't find them in the developer forum with a search )

What the heck is it with all the "vacation" talk? Who's the specialist that started circulating this fairy tale (*)??

I am not on vacation. I had to travel abroad to kick off a new project I'll be working on for the next six months.

There. Better?

As gorg mentioned above, I'll also be stuck with dial-up access (= max. up-/download speed: 7kB/s) until the middle of the week, which is not only about as speedy and exciting as watching sap run down a tree but also expensive as hell.

What this means is that until I got somewhat decent internet access, I can only fix the most urgent of bugs (i.e., image verification for registration of new members, etc.).

(* – "fairy tale" because: "Damn do I wish that was true.")

Gotta say, I'm loving the theme. But the more I see it, the more I think the various buttons could fit with the style better (i.e. the quote, quick reply, etc. buttons).

I do like the new stars, they fit in well with the theme (unlike the smileys, but that's been covered), but the empty stars do look weird. I've had a quick go at some variations, the first is the 'empty star' as it is now, one is literally half a star, the other is a 50% tint as suggested in this thread.

And also had a go at the post marker envelopes, I liked the system before with white or yellow envelopes with a red circle marker, but I understand about red not fitting in with the new theme, so here is an updated version with the circle markers in the theme graphite colour. Yellow envelopes for new posts, white envelopes for old, graphite blobs for threads you have posted in.

I would say that I'm not bothered about the post counts being displayed in threads but....

woohoo 2000th post!!!

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

the original empty stars that i made were at like 15% opacity. adam made them completely white in the center. i suppose we could always seem how they looked.

the yellow envelopes are a bit garish. altho i do like the idea of a dot ONLY representing threads in which you've posted.

Yes, its basically the system as it was on the old style forum. Yellow or white envelopes for new or old posts, and dots or no dots for you posting or not posting in them. All this yellow dot green dot business is confusing.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

That is great! If the colors need to change a bit so be it, but that would be much better than what it is now.

I agree. The colors are about right according to Sim Daltonism (color-blindness simulator), unless a user suffers from full monochromatism where the contrast isn't high enough.

Hi All
I've mentioned before how great I think macnn forums are, have got lots of wonderful help for people.

Just a bit of feedback though with your website. The new look is great, but just still a couple of problems with it.

When you first use the website or haven't visited it for a while it's hard to remember how to submit a post. This is because there are no quick links on the home page to submit a new post.

For instance before you can submit a post you have to get to the actual forums, which is also a little difficult to find, because neither forums link or the new post link are situated in your quick links buttons.

To improve this I think it would be great to have both a forum button and new post button in the existing row of buttons (currently situated near the top of the screen).

When you click on forums then it should take you into a screen to look either at all forums or you can choose which forum to look at.

When you click on the new post button it should take you to a screen which says you have to log in to do a new post, if you are already logged in it should take you to a screen which asks you to select which forum you want your new post to go into.

I think the new post button should always appear in the existing row of buttons at the top of each screen so that when you do a search of a particular forum you can submit a new post (which you can't currently seem to do)

By the way I also noticed that you can't seem to search now unless you log in, but there is nothing on the screen to tell you that, I just figured that out because my searches don't work unless I am logged in.

I'll do this sometime soon.
So, is this something you can do (without effgee)?
It seems that some of the links have been updated (like in threads and in the Mac Pro forum), but the rest have not. For example, the links in the bottom of the new peripherals forum has a (dead) link to the old peripherals forum.

I would very much appreciate this particular fix, and from the comments it looks like a lot of other people would too. Thanks

Although I like the new appearance I find it surprising that it went final just before the obviously only person who can fix bugs went away on business or vacation or whatever. It's now been almost three weeks since the switch and many of the bugs listed in this thread still persist. Is there a plan on when and how these issues will be dealt with?

When I mouse over the "Private messages" link, this whole section moves up a few pixels:

You last visited: Today at 08:47 PM
Private Messages: Unread 0, Total 8.
When I remove the mouse pointer, it falls back down.

This only happens with Safari. With Firefox, it stays stationary.

Status update: Frank (the designer) isn't on vacation, he's on a job in Germany. He was expecting to be able to work on all of this throughout that job, so there wasn't going to be any strange hiatus between the launch and the bugfixes, but he's having very severe problems with his internet connection that just couldn't be foreseen. Here's a note from him:

Sorry for the recent lack of communication ... I've been without any kind of internet connection from (my temporary German) home for weeks now and it doesn't look like I'll be getting anything that goes beyond using my cell as a modem (= slow as hell, expensive as poo) or driving to the nearest coffeeshop that offers wireless access (= 12 miles away, huge pain in the butt, also quite pricey) until I get back to the US, which won't be until the middle/end of April. In their repeated and failed attempts to install "Satellite DSL", the bastards from the German Telekom messed up my parents' phone lines so badly that I can't even go online using a dial-up provider.
This is obviously disappointing and annoying, but it should be made clear that this isn't Frank flaking out, it's just random **** happening. I'm currently very busy myself, but I'm going to talk to Demonhood about what kinds of bugs we might be able to clean up before Frank gets back to the US. Changes to the icons and other design-related issues will have to wait, but there may be some things we can get done without having to sit around until April.

Obviously, had we known this was going to happen, we would not have launched, but what can you do. I'll be going through the bug list, but if there are non-design related fixes that you view as critical, please feel free to remind me.

Yeah the whole user cp page is still a GUI nightmare. The complaints that were made about it before the redesign were never taken into consideration. And just left the same.

The user CP complaints were taken into consideration in the Theme Beta Forum and just weren't addressed before Frank left.
