I'm just musing about the code name that will be assigned to the next version of Apple's venerable operating system.

So far we've had Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, and now Leopard.

Here are some of the remaining cat names:
Lion, Lynx, Cougar (though a cougar is a Puma!), Bobcat, and Ocelot.

There are also many other more obscure ones but I don't think Apple is going to code name an OS "Colocolo" or "Margay."

My favorite is Mac OS 10.6 "Lynx," what's yours?

Hard to say what's next, but in order to cut off the wiseguys I'll say it now:

Liger. Bred for its skills in magic. We had about a million people say that the last time the topic came up, because of Napoleon Dynamite.

I think Mac OS 10.6 should be called: Mac OS X 10.6 Ashera.

It's either Lynx or Cougar, as Apple trademarked them both.

I'm waging on Ocelot. There's a... ring to it. The cat itself is small yet super quick, and looks sneaky.

Ah the Mac OS X 10.6 "Kitty". I like it. After all, no cat is as feral and sneaky as the Kitty (Felis silvestris catus)

Yes, I know Ligers actually exist. There are also Tigons, too.

But after Napoleon Dynamite came out... everyone thought it'd be "cute" to say that quote I posted above.

I really don't think it'll be a kitty.

I think Apple will get onboard with the majority and call it OS X 10.6 "Bulldog"

Cougar, it has more musical appeal with its two syllables, that start on an upbeat 'cou' followed by a powerful lower 'gar' that stabilizes the whole. Lynx is a tad harsh, ocelot a bit precious and monotone.

Just my 2 cents

A Cougar and a Puma are the same cat, or sometimes better known as a Mountain Lion. Puma was used as the code name for 10.1.

I vote for Alley Cat.

Did not know that, intake. I'd like to see Lion be the last of the cats.

I don't think we'll see dog names till OS XI, if not, never.

Which begs another question will Apple call OS X "OS X 11.*" or "OS XI"?

I assume we'd have to go to OS 11.

Even when Apple switched from the naming scheme of "Mac OS #" to "Mac OS X 10.#"?

Aside from Jobs, most people pronounce the name as OS "10." "OS 10 11.0" doesn't sound right.

Well, it's not "x," it's ten.

OS 7, OS 8, OS 9, OS x?

X=Roman numeral ten.

Serisouly people, it's pronounced OS 10

Want some proof?
Open Terminal, type
say x
Now type
say os x

Huh? I know X is the roman numeral for 10, I've known that sense I was V. I just choose to say OS X not OS 10.

I guess that means the question is if Apple will stick with roman numerals or go back to numbers...

Did Apple buy or steal some software from an developer that named their software using various cat species? I remember reading something that said Apple used the same precession that the developer used.

Apple didn't steal anything. They say back in the brief days when there were Mac clones one manufacture named their machines after cats. They had a bunch of names for different seceding versions of machine but when Apple shutdown the cloners they never got to use them.

That what I remember reading a year or so ago, I could be wrong.

Depending on who you ask, a Leopard and a Panther are the same. To quote wikipedia:
In North America, panther means cougar and in South America a panther is a jaguar. Elsewhere in the world a panther is a leopard.
I vote for Fritz the Cat.

BARNCAT.

Shows up mostly wild, with great potential , but still takes a year of care and feeding to domesticate the damn beast...
